Does anyone know where I can buy a jewel tang?
Any help would be appreciated.
They used to have them on occasion at the Marine Center in TX.
Thanks,
Wrassta

Good Luck thay are vary hard to find i have been in the hoby for 3 years in and never seen one yet. and i go to a lot of fish store's and work at one. also they are 300-500 + $$$ to get one.

Acanthurus guttatus = jewel tang

Zebrasoma gemmatum = gem tang

There is always confusion over the two... I have a jewel tang that takes care of my frag system that I've had for over a year now... no gem tang yet... Jewel tangs are also hard to come by, but much less expensive... I got mine for around $100 locally... gem tangs are $1000 and up... I believe the last time the Marine Center had them they were $1800, and this was YEARS ago... It would be easier to get in touch with Bin Laden than the shipper out of Mauritius it seems... and these gems are not common anywhere they are collected and the exporter is picky about who they go to... good luck even finding one, much less at any decent price... if you're truly interested in jewel tangs I could elaborate...

whoops, yes you are right, my mistake, i was referring to zebrasoma gemmatum

marinedepot hasn't had one in years. There is no way they can charge only 88$ for one now. i try to catch them in Hawaii... man its tough! they live in the surge zones so you are constantly getting smashed into the rocks. lol. 99% of them are coming from Hawaii and i havn't seen one at any wholesalers in almost a year... i'll have to try harder to get them :)

copps. any pics of yours? My friend caught one that was 2" and was a really cool fish. the ones i usually see are huge (6-12") an are just gorgeous!

I've caught a bunch of these guys, including the 2 inchers Zemuron mentioned. They're actually pretty common here and not hard to catch (if you know how), but they live in very rough water so their habitat is usually inaccessible. Although they're very cool fish, they aren't valuable enough to warrant difficult collecting trips so most collectors don't bother going after them.

Matt,
You should consider some export, they are one of the most expensive Surgeonfish out there.

If the local wholesalers paid more for the fish we'd probably have more divers chasing them. I don't think most exporters are aware that it's an in-demand species.
