Joe's reef system

well i think i made a big mistake today. Kim and I did more funiture and tank shopping today. after shopping around a couple of lfs in the next county over we ended up at one of our lfs. i ended up with a green stripe mushroom, a male lyretail anthias and 3 black and gold chromis/damsels. the first 2 were on my soon to get list, the 3rd i hadnt even seen before. after coming home and researching them i find out their temperment is "bold" by saltwaterfish.com's remarks. i still have them in the bag being acclimated but i'm thinking of taking them back to the store tomorrow(if they'll exchange them).

there's not alot of reading material on them but here's something i found:

gold & black

Hey man im not sure about the fish but if he is acting bad, take him back to the store, lol. I also sent you a pm. Good luck with the fish

thanks Billy, those fish were exchanged the very next day and i learned my lesson on impulse buying.

i have a few updates:

first, i built an Algae Turf Scrubber. the frame is wood and the water flows through a vinyl gutter with gutter screen material submerged underwater and (2) 100wt "curly q" bulbs about 6" about the water surface. i made sure the ATS unit can be completely removed with ease when sump maintenance is needed, the ATS is basically hung on the stand being supported by to bolts.

the first day up and running

its been a week today but this pic was after only 5 days

all the corals seem happier since i did some rearrange of them and the flow outputs.

the hammer regained its color once it was placed in lower flow

the green star polyp started spreading more when i up'd the flow slightly

the zoa seems to like its spot because its spreading nicely

this Male Lyretail Anthias was added to the display tank after being in the QT for 5-6weeks, yesterday would have been 6 weeks but i added him Christmas eve as my gift to me

my dad gave me a yellow tang as a christmas gift. it is in the QT now

i added a Scarlet cleaner shrimp for color and activity, i have 2 peppermint shrimp but i rarely see them.

not bad got a new skimmer goin on my 125 gallon, and got my 75 gallon recovering from bubble algae outbreak, plus rose bubble tip split again so i got 4 rbta in my tank. You guys have a good xmas down there in warmer part of country cause it was freezin one day up here than 68 the next day with tornado watches and tons of storms, midwest has crazy weather.

i'm having a little bubble algae showing up in my tank too, congrats on the rbta spilting.

you aint gotta tell me about crazy weather, i didnt even feel like xmas here, highs were 80-85 and lows around 65...that makes it hard to be in the spirit.

:-) It's 75 here in Maryland as well. It's nutz!
Do you guys feel that a refusium (spelling?) would help with the algee issue?

it can cause putting chaeto in a sump in helps export nutrients like nitrates and phosphates, chaeto absorbs those nutrients and grows and then you throw some away and more grows, thats how you export the bad stuff. Plus good breeding ground for different pods in sump that will flow up return pump into main tank which than becomes free food for fish and corals. I have bristle worms and stomatella and collinista snails breeding in my fuge, i give them to friends cause stomatella and collinista snails are free and breed very easy and are very good small algae eating snails. Just keep good flow and light over sump refugium.

as D says a fuge would help depending on whats in it, chaeto for example would be a good. after doing much reading i decided to go with an algae turf scrubber versus a fuge(which may come in the near future) because newer research is showing ATS out performing fuges...not to say the studies couldnt have been bias, it just made sense to me.

D, yesterday i searched everywhere for your tank chronicle. i thought i subsribed to it a while back but i guess not. can you put a link in this thread to it?

i'm about to catch a flight to Gatlinburg, TN and i'm not sure if the cabin we're staying in has internet hook-up. so if not i will see everyone Saturday and Happy New Year!!!

i think that one is in another saltwater forum i'll try to find a link, clicking on my little red house will take you to forum.

1. You are insanely handy and incredibly well researched. Congratulations on being both.

2. I love the rock configuration on the left (looking at the tank). It looks very natural.

hey D, ill check it out

thanks Jimmy, i'm glad you're on board the thread

Hey all...we're back. i have a couple of pics

Kim fit in perfectly when we were up there. i guess you can take the girl out of the country but you cant take the country out the girl.
