John's Noob ?'s thread. . .PLZ Help if BOLD

Yup, aptasia and cyano. Looks like some zoas on the cyano rock as well.

You can turkey baster then suck up the cyano with you water change. I'd get rid of the aptasia ASAP.

ok so zoas, good? and as far as ridding the Aptasia i just yank it or burn it or cut? just want to be sure to do it correctly. Thanks!

search aptasia removal on RC...or google 'site:reefcentral.com aptasia removal'. There are nearly as many different thoughts on that subject as members on here.

Good or bad?!

Good or bad?!

Any idea what this is? I think a snail but I don't know how it got in my sump? Also possible copods? How? Why? Thanks in advance.

I think 700 pounds of liverock is way overkill for a 240. Even 400 pounds of rock is overkill IMO for a 240. I'd go with the tried, criticised, and true 1 pound per gallon rule. I didn't use 1 pound per gallon in my tank, more like 1/2 a pound per gallon, but thats because I prefer a minimalist look in reef tanks. Not barren just minimalist...I'd say a solid 250 pounds will do you right, but as another said you'll be kicking yourself later on for buying all that rock unless it was really cheap...

CUC suggestions for my 250 mix reef

CUC suggestions for my 250 mix reef

As stated above, i would like some suggestions from our more experienced reef keepers as what to keep and how many of each i should get. thanks!

any ideas anyone for my DT's clean up crew? just to be clear, my total live/base rock combo is 250lbs. w/ an additonal 50 in the sump and im fixing to plumb in a 30G refugium.

@scubasteve06: I never intended to add 700+lbs. of rock to the tank, just an FYI i think you misread somewhere, but i also didn't make myself too clear. Sorry thanks anyway.

I am not a fan of chemicals in my tank however I just used chemi clean to get rid of the cyno in my tank that I have been battling for months. In two days it was all gone. I double dosed it with no ill effects to my corals, fish, CUC. I have always used distilled white vinegar in a diabetes syringe to get rid of the aptisia. As far as the most recent pic, I can't make out what they are sorry.

The cyanobacteria treatments usually work, but usually temporarily, since they don't solve any basic problems. Sometimes, they do crash tanks. I wouldn't use one again.

Hey so im back and i have another few questions here. first off, I would like to store about 60-100 Gal of premade saltwater and RO/DI water, but my question is how long can these sit w/out being used before they are no longer any good for use? anyone know?

I have two brute trash cans that hold 32g a piece that I keep stored in a plastic rubbermaid shed outside that I bought at HD cheap(working there has its benefits:D) I have my RO/DI output going into one of them with a float switch I got off marine depot (eventually will be connected to my AC lite). I use the one for holding freshly made RO/DI water and then I use a maxijet 1200 to pump the ro/di water into the other trash can where I then add my salt and use the maxijet to mix it. I keep a heater in there also to keep it around 78 degrees. Since this shed is outside the heater stays on almost all the time but it's a big heater. IIRC it's 250w which is overkill for 30g, but like I said it's outside since it was the only place I had room to put my water making station.

Since I do my water changes once a week, the float switch kicks the ro/di unit on whenever I pump out the water that was in the one trash can, and stays there for 6 days until I pump it out the night before I do my water change and let it mix and heat up. It won't go bad.

New Questions, need some help again. . .

New Questions, need some help again. . .

So, first of all I would like to add a quick DIY ATO for my tank preferably gravity fed, any ideas?

Also, i'd like to add a 30Gal refugium tank (already have the tank) any ideas on how to add the baffles and all that? also how to plumb it to the DT/sump? Thanks everyone!

Stomatella snail, great hitchhiker, won't harm anything and helps keep your tank clean. They can also reproduce in your tank, so if you see little white puffs of "smoke" randomly coming out of your rock it's most likely just Stomatella spawning.

If the 30 is glass you can just go to Lowes and get plexiglass cut to your width. Then you just use 100% silicone WITHOUT mold inhibitor and "glue" them in place. Silicone doesn't truly stick to acrylic, but it does hold it. Make sure both the glass and acrylic are very clean. Any stuff will make the silicone not stick.

Your baffel height will depend, but generally 9-12" seem to be the norm. You will stack 3 baffels 1 inch apart with the middle one 1 inch off of the bottom.

Here is a link to an idea I had. I've since changed this and am building using acrylic, but you get the idea.

As far as connecting, are you drilled or are you going to use a HOB box?
