John's Noob ?'s thread. . .PLZ Help if BOLD

Sorry JSG, but I can't see embeded pics today for some reason. Are you not going to run it as a true sump and have a skimmer in it? If not, you will still need the baffels to 1)help keep your macro out of the pump side, 2) help minimize micro bubbles, which in your case will come from your water pouring down from the tank.

Okay JSG, now that I've seen your drawing, I think your best bet is going to be to connect your fuge to your sump via bulkhead. Remember, your fuge is there to take up nutrients and to grow pods basically. I don't remember if you said, but why are you separating the two? It would be easier to have it all in one. I guess another option would be to add a small pump to the fuge and let it just pump water back to the sump. Problem with that is that you would have to equal the amount of water going out as coming in or otherwise you would flood.

Maybe someone else can come up with a better solution. I think baffles and bulkheads are going to be your answer though.

I would T the return line to put part of the flow into the refugium. It has an overflow, so that should be fine.

I believe his problem is how to get water back to the sump from the fuge. From his drawing to me it seems to stand alone with no way to return water back to the sump. I think a bulkheaded connection between the two tanks is the only really viable option. What say you?

LOL! JSG, I'm sorry, but I can't make heads or tails of your drawing but I'm going to take a stab at it. It looks like you are "t"ing off of the return pump as Jonathan suggested but I still don't see how you are getting water back into the sump. Also, you don't need baffles in the fuge because there is nothing to produce micro-bubbles. Also, why are you showing double "t"s? Sorry for the confusion. I would also recommend using Google SketchUp. Great program and easy to learn.

Thanks for your help so far; so here is what I'm doing to get water back to the sump. If you look at the blue line that is after the unnecessary baffles you will see that it goes to the little rectangle on the bottom left of the sump. This is a bulkhead. That was how I planned on bringing water to the sump. With this in mind it should work no? Also, will it hurt my tank while my cute is cycling? What should I expect?

But how are you getting the water OUT of the fuge to go in to the bulkhead? Are you going to use a pump or is the fuge going to sit higher and gravity will jut let it flow back with each tank having a bulkhead and a piece of hose connecting the two? If you are "t"ing off to supply the fuge and letting it drain back via gravity it should work fine. I would suggest having only a small difference in heights though. You don't want a waterfall coming from the fuge--h20 level will always be low and it will wash things out of the fuge. An inline checkvalve may be good as well, but someone else could maybe answer that one.

Make sure you do have one baffle to keep macro and snails etc from entering the bulkhead, but you don't need three as a bubble trap. Sorry for the confusion on that.

"Cute" cycling? I'm not sure if it would affect your tank in a negative way because you are just adding a larger water volume. This makes thing easier, but you will still get a cycle but it would just amount to greater dilution of byproducts. Like pouring a cup of bleach in a tub or pouring a cup into a swimming pool--still one cup, just much more dilute. Really shouldn't matter though, because you don't have any animals in your tank yet. I don't feel it will speed up or hinder any kind of cycle.

Is this a brain

LOL!, don't you love when a plan comes together!? I wish I could tell you yes or no, but I would say a firm maybe yes. It's a pretty piece regardless.

Did you get your sump issues resolved? Been waiting for an update.

Oh yeah, it's in the works and it is going to be gravity fed! So yeah, gotta love the plans! Haha! Well I sure hope this coral is a brain cuz that's what tue LFS in Houston told me

LOL! I hear ya'. What part of Houston you from? Mother and father in law used to live in the Clear Lake area. Loved going down for visits.

Oh, I'm not from Houston but I know where your talking about. I actually live near Corpus Christi, a few hours south
