Join me for a strange one...

kcress,

Apart from all of the engineering questions I have, one stands out more than the others:

"Why in the heck do you have 4000 lbs of Clay laying around???"

And a forklift, and a shop....?

Otherwise it looks great, but you are still crazy :-0

Stu

I stole it all. :hmm4:

:lol2:

I have a good family friend who owns a ceramics supply place, about 6,000sqft, in the next row of commercial tilt-ups. He has 30 pallets of clay and a forklift. Also 1/2 a block the other way is the building supply place with the scale out front. So I drove the clay down there and set it on the scales too. Pretty sweet deal.

The shop is just.. My office. I'm an EE and do all sorts of weird jobs - not that you can tell by this build... :p

Does your ceramics supply friend only supply artsy-fartsies or does he sell refractory materials too? My upcoming project is a brick pizza oven!

Bean - I have been doing research on the pizza ovens....shoot me a P.M. with an e-mail address if you would like copies of the links I have.

"My upcoming project is a brick pizza oven! "

Pizza ... RIGHT... wink, wink, nudge, nudge......

No chance this "pizza oven" has the exact dimensions required to heat a cone skimmer body...... wink, wink, nudge, nudge......Ay?

Is it considered thread hijacking if the OP rarely visits his own thread with updates?

Lets see that thing raise and lower with the new drive system mods!

tee... I spent forever researching the different oven plans, at least 3 times over the last 5 years. I have gone back and forth on what design to use, but the forno bravo forums appear to be the most active and from a community support standpoint. You can email me at gmail.com, as I am always happy to look at different options :)

Yeah...I know - but I also know that you are the ultimate research guy - and can't resist the opportunity to see if there is ONE option out there better. Will share what I have found via e-mai. ..Now - back to our regularly scheduled OP....

I'm wowed by all the sweet DIY stuff going on here. Nice work.

Of course I'm eagerly awaiting to see how you do the plumbing. I foresee in your future, a new invention called Slinky-vinyl-chloride.

But the reefer in me wants to see the LED plans :D :D. I have my own LED rig with 13 blue XRE and 13 white XPG, both dimmable. Any idea if you're going to follow the same route most of us use (ie, constant current drivers etc.... ) or if you have a seemingly voodoo way of making DIY LED dies from scratch.....;)

Love this thread, I'm subscribed.

Shudder.. A picture is worth about 1 billion words when it comes to plumbing. Hang in there.

I can tell you the original plan.. Of course, the sump is going to sit on the floor. The closed loop pump is supposed to sit on the floor. And flexible hose is supposed to be the key solution.

I was going to guess that it involved some helix coils of flex pipe, but you would have to make sure it was supported well at the fitting junctions.

Am I close?

Either that, or an air gap drain and a fountain for the return ;)

Umm. He sells fire brick. But mostly artsy-fartsies as our town is know for art and ceramics.

Those legs can backlash. Maybe not as you have them now but if they are the same design as whats used on tractor-trailors they can and will back lash. Ask my ribs and my chin :) I think you went over it earlier but I'm not sure, what did you do to prevent the backlash effect.

Hmmm.. First lets get the terminology correct.

Backlash is defined as the initial movement of the input shaft before any movement of the output shaft starts to occur - on reversal. It's measured in degrees and usually is a very small number.

Having a jack unwind is not backlash it would probably be termed as "unwinding" or "runaway".

Screw jacks are not supposed to runaway. If they do they're defective. If you were pummeled it was from a defective one. Mine aren't defective. They don't unwind. If they wanted too they would also have to drive the chains backwards. All four would have to be defective at the same time. And, they'd have to turn the gear motor backwards. Not gonna happen on my stand. It takes torque to even lower my stand with a load on it. By hand it just barely possible to turn the shafts by hand and get it to go down s l o w l y.

I may have missed it but how much do you think you will need to raise and lower on average to gain access to the top, etc.

This is a awesome idea! And my what I have seen so far you are doing a great job of pulling it off. The whole idea makes me have visions of takeing the idea to the extreme and haveing the tank go from the basement to the upstairs depending on which place I was spending time LOL. That way the tank could follow you up or down. But that would be more of a elavator type deal. Anyway awesome build!

Whatever the proper term maybe they still hurt like immortal he!! when it happens is all I was stating. Your style legs may be different than those on the semi trailor. I'm pretty sure you have made it so they can't unwind. All I was stating is that I have seen and felt Brand new trailors do this. Most of the time it happened to me the laod inside the trailor was VERY uneven so I'm going to guess that one side was holding up alot more pressure than the other side.

I can imagine. Like getting kicked by a mule about 4 times a second!

Could be when the jack load is very low? That would reduce all the frictional loads that might otherwise provide the resistance to freewheeling.

Interesting at any rate.

Ill take the mule kick over a 45000lb trailor kick anyday. I love the deisgn you have and also the imagination it took to draw this up in your head and then turn it into reality. Loking forward to more updates as you get to them.
