welcome to URS!

welcome to URS!

you just joined ;)

this is an informal club- no dues and no regularly scheduled meets....
this forum is where the vast majority of public action takes place.
Enjoy your stay!

Yup, you're a member! Welcome. We have sporadic frag swaps and occasional get togethers at a local LFS. See you soon!

Boy, its a good thing this is a cheap hobby. buy the time I get done paying dues I might still have enough money for a frag or two

At one point there was talk of making this an official club... right around the time of the event at the zoo (awesome event). I think there was even a website.

Anyway, what ever happened to the idea of making it an official club with regular events?

Formalizing the club was a nice idea.Particularly the idea of shared equipment like higher end light meters(par meters) for sharing and a couple of speaking events by aquarists of note .As it turned out most chose to keep it informal as it is now.

I think it will be a few months before a frag swap comes up but maybe someone will do a reef crawl, a roving band of aquarium nuts jumping from house to house to check out puddles of salt water. They can be fun.

I like things the way they are. We have lots of nice benefits (frag trades, other events) and a really great sense of community, but we don't have the drama or "overhead" that's killed off many other clubs over the years (as is evident if you lurk around the other club forums on this site).

Yeah once a formal structure comes into play , human nature gets political and those issues tend to dwarf the reef issues and take some of the fun out of it all.

The folks we had leading the effort here were stellar though and genuinely interested in the good of the hobby and the animals and folks in it. We were lucky to have them step up and try it and had some nice events and dialogue.

Not all are like that. A formal club can get a life of it's own that isn't always in sync with what it's members want out of it.Some of them tend to silence members and take odd and confrontational positions reflective of the idiosyncrasies of some club officers and not the other hobbyists in the geographic area ,they claim to represent.

I like the open informal way with many voices . It seems to suit an evolving dynamic hobby. It encourages indepedent action. Anyone with an event idea only has to be willing to guage interest on this forum and then do the work of coordinating it.Anyone with a position on a reefkeeping technique only needs to state it and be prepared to defend it without acrimony.
