Journal of a CUT S. gigantea

Weird? Are you going to treat it in QT or just keep it there and away from your DT?

I had an opportunity this weekend to get a green gig and passed on it just because I was finally having some success with my purple gig and didn't want to risk the health of my other carpets.

Hope it pulls through!

Sorry for the bad shot, but here's what it looked like this morning:

Here's what it looks like now:

Well, it looks like it's going to be okay. I'm going to keep it in my QT tank (no treatment, just a holding tank) until I figure out what I'm going to do -- definitely not going back into the DT though.

I don't think he looks too bad. I certainly don't think it look like a pancake the first picture. Good luck with him.

any update on your gig?

Here's a photo of it at lights on this morning:

It's fine and hasn't deflated at all.

I know I said I wasn't going to put it back in the DT, but I'm really tempted to do so. If the nem deflates again, then I would start to assume that there is allelopathy between gigantea. My large gig hasn't moved since the small one was removed, and the small one hasn't deflated since I removed it. Thoughts? Should I move it back? Granted, I don't want to harm the anemone, but I know it can recover quickly if I remove it.

I had mie together for a long time touching without problem. I only move it because they are really geting too big for my 65 g tank.
i would say put them back. I think they will be fine.

Mine hug eachother all day long without problem. Granted I don't have long term success to report but they have been touching since jan at the lfs though.

I have been MIA since my nems parished. Got it taken care of and now I can refocused on gathering some more healthy uncut nems.

Great to see that he is doing well. I personally would wait after all that trouble taking him out of there in the first place. Let him fully healed where all the tentacles are fully form then you can put him back in. I know its tempting to add him in believe me. It is for the best of the nem. You got him this far a few more weeks or month isn't going to harm him. On e he fully heals and eat only then when you can intro him this way he has a fighting chance at a chemical warfare if any. It's my 2cents so take it with a grain of salt. Good luck

Offering an alternative point of view I would put him back in your DT. He deserves your best and is now proven to be healthy. In addition, if anybody can diagnose a sick gig you can. Given the fact that you have the luxury of checking on it several times a day you can act quickly and remove it should anything go awry.

Agree with Rotknee... Put'em in. If he's strong enough to survive he will otherwise this is going to be an endless cycle in which you have to choose one. I hope they can co-exist because they both look awesome.

UPDATE: The purple gig has been in the DT for a few weeks now, no deflating and showing all signs of a healthy gig, EXCEPT that the siphonoglyphs still show periodically. This doesn't seem to affect its ability to eat. Also, it's still not a complete circular shape as it should be. It has a "short" end where the cut was:

Also, I've decided that I have to sell the larger gig. It's still slowly moving toward the purple gig, and already mowed down some zoa/paly colonys and killed some SPS. Again, this gig has been in my tank over a year and never moved more than an inch until the addition of the purple gig. I definitely think it can "smell" the other gig. Current shot of the DT:

They can and should be aboe to co-exist. Mine were touchign for months with no problem. One just get too bid for my 65 g tank and I removed it.

I think they can live together, but the larger one is just getting too big, and I'm not directly feeding it anymore. It's probably 15"+ and takes up a 1/3 of the tank now. My dream tank is a 4' x 4' x 2' high square tank (basically two of the tank that I have now) but the wife already axed the idea. :sad2: Since I can't get a bigger tank, or set up another one, it's time for me to find the big guy a new home. The purple gig will stay in the DT.

I must admit, when I saw a response to this thread after a while of being quiet it had me worried... Glad to hear the patient is doing well, but bummer to hear you have to get rid of one...

Derrick I am happy to hear the purple gig is doing well but sad to hear you may get rid of the big gig. If I hadn't stumbled across my purple gig a few months ago I would have made you an offer quick, fast and in a hurry...LOL. My gig and haddoni combined take up a good chunk of my real estate so I have had to resist getting another gig and can relate to your desire for a bigger tank. As scarce as gigs are in the Bay I'm sure you will find someone to take good care of it.

I had a couple of good leads in the Bay, but nothing solid. I've decided to put it up for sale in the livestock forum.

The purple one continues to grow and eats voraciously, reacting much quicker than my other gig used to (I no longer target feed it).
