JP's 240. A decade of work.

Update:

Love the new ATI Powermodules!! They are by far the best light I have ever had. Also still doing water changes only once a month and all seems well. I really let things go for the month of September, and the recovery in color is slow, but I think the end result by March will be spectacular . . .

Looking great Joe, is that a purple monster colony on the left? Colors look pretty good overall to me. :)

Love it! Are you using the powermodule with LEDs?

What's your bulb combo?

Thanks! Yes, believe it or not the King LED Hater is actually using LEDs :D

BUT, I'm only running them at 40% max and only the blues, no whites. (The chart below was taken before I switched to all blue all day for the LEDs)

Because my tank is square I'm using a pair of ATI Powermodules which means I have 16 bulbs. Definitely not the cheapest option, but I can't say enough good things about how good my corals are looking under T5.

Right now these are the bulbs I'm using:

Fauna Marin Ultra Royal Blue
Giesemann Super Actinic
ATI Coral Plus
ATI Purple Plus
ATI Aquablue Special
ATI Coral Plus
Giesemann Super Actinic
Fauna Marin Ultra Royal Blue

then the same in reverse on the other fixture.

I turn the blue and actinic on first. I just love how nicely the fixture ramps up and down in the morning and the evening, and I absolutely love looking at the tank when it's down to blue bulbs and blue LEDs. It's really a super combo for evening viewing!

Thanks Josh! Yes it's a Purple Monster on the left. Oddly enough the two corals that got hit with something weird in September and are really struggling are my pink stylo and the ponape birdsnest both of which are usually really hardy and fast growers for me. The birdsnest started growing in a super dense pattern and the stylo got some bare spots. My primary suspects are flow and lighting. One of the Giesemann Spectra fixtures I was using before getting the ATIs had lost one pair of T5s due to corrosion and a broken end piece and my Tunze's were slowing down due to algae.

Anyways, I wouldn't say my corals are perfect yet, but they all seem to be getting better day by day. Now just to keep the tank in good shape for a few months and hopefully all will grow out nicely shaped and colorful!

It's a really beautiful colony you have there, how long has it been with you?

Struggles of an SPS tank, but you're an old pro so I have no doubt you'll get it sorted out soon. Thanks for the update by the way. :)

I got my frag in 2007 and for a while it grew like crazy. Lately not growing so fast which makes me nervous but I've learned to accept that corals come and corals go. The good news is there are always plenty of beautiful corals to be found :D

That's a beautiful tank! Wow! Do you think the new ati's are worth it then?

Thank you!

I'm a very fortunate man in that I can afford nice things. For me the blue shimmer at dusk is worth the money. If I were focused on just growing beautiful SPS then I would say it wasn't worth the extra money.

Looking really nice. What time of day did you take that pic?

That was full light midday, but I stopped the camera down low because I think that gives a truer representation. I look at Lunar's photos and I really wonder how he does it because he takes amazing photographs with full light. Either he's a master aquarist at a level no other human has yet to achieve or he's really really good at photography.

thank joe, also another question how does Giesemann Super Actinic compare to Ati true actinic or are they really similar?

Good question! I have wondered the same.. Probably a mix of both..
But rows and rows of t5 really help fill in the shadows.. Makes the photo you are starting with (before editing) much easier to play with. More information, more well lit areas..
Deborah is taking some pretty amazing pics as well... If you're interested..

Loving your tank, Joe!

Sorry for the uber slow update . . . As an old time US aquarist I started the hobby using UVL Super Actinics for dawn/dusk viewing and still think that is the nicest "blue" lighting out there. The Giesemann Super Actinic is identical in appearance (at least to my eyes) where as the ATI True Actinic induces slightly less fluorescence.

Great looking tank, nice purple chirstmas tree you have there :inlove:

Tragically the Christmas Tree or Purple Monster got hit with something. I managed to frag it and so far 5 frags have survived. If I lose all the frags I'll be truly heart broken as that is my favorite coral of all time.

Overall Update:

So I'm about 4 months into using the ATI LED Powermodule and I feel I have seen some interesting results both positive and negative. Overall I feel the colors in my tank are outstanding, but I was struggling with getting reds and pinks to really pop, plus my stylophora that was directly under an LED cluster was "burning" on the top, and my strawberry shortcake was brown in one small area where it lay under an LED cluster, and I was having trouble with diatoms on my sand, and I felt my OT (Oregon Tort) was ever so slightly paler than I like. I therefore turned the LEDs off except for 1 hour in the morning and 1 hour in the evening. I had been running them 14 hours but only at 35% peak power. I didn't think they would have much effect at such low power.

It has now been a month without fulltime LED and I have noted several changes all for the better.

1) The brown area on the strawberry shortcake is almost all gone and the colony is regaining full color.
2) My purple humilis which was pale purple is turning radiant and deep purple.
3) My OT is regaining a deeper blue.
4) The pink birdsnest is turning to a glowing pink and a red coral that I have been growing from a tiny frag is suddenly changing from just dull brick red to a bright glowing red.
5) The top of the stylophora is healing.
6) A deep water suharsoi that was green is turning glowing white with radiant yellow tips.
7) The diatoms on my sand are gone.

Bottom line: 14 hours of LED light at 30% was not good for some of my corals. If I had to guess I would say that PWM (Pulse Width Modulation) is not as harmless as folks think. Although the LED looks dim to our eye the coral is feeling a firehose of photons that are turned on and off and this negatively impacts some zoox.

Not scientific at all just the observations of a long time aquarist.

Will try to get some photos later :D

Thanks for the update Joe, always interesting reading. I have turned off my white LED's but I'm resisting turning off the blues because I love the morning/evening effect. Evidence is building though ...

Joe, I think that is one huge misconception people have. They don't think the LEDs look bright like halides do so they crank them up and burn things.
Thank you for sharing your experience.

Corey

Do you have a PAR meter? Is there any correlation between the corals that didn't do well with the LEDs on and where the LED hotspots are?

From what I recall of the power module, much like the PacSun T5/LED units, the LEDs are clustered and can make for some serious hotspots throughout the tank. Even at 30% LED, that might explain some of what you observed. It would be consistent with corals in certain locations doing particularly worse than others.

Either way, it's quite interesting. I like the addition of LED to T5 (for viewing), but I use BML strips for the LED part (to avoid the hotspots). If you are seeing something other than the hotspots causing problems, that would be troubling to me and I need to rethink my setup...
