June Meeting Update

To all members of WRS......
The meeting that Josh and I are holding on June 2nd will start at 2:00 or so. The 16 chickens are ordered and the pit is ready for cooking. We will be eating between 4:00 and 5:00. There will be a 1/4 barrel of beer and also soda. If you would like something other than that you are more than welcome to bring it. We will have a 20 gallon tank set up with a heater and filter for those who want to bring frags to sell or trade. We will also have a table set up for if someone wants to sell some equipment, sort of a rummage sale for the hobby. So clean out that fish room. Your spouses are also invited. The party will be held outside between our 2 houses.

Bring it with if you want to play pool. As you know I also have a variety of cues to choose from if you don't want to drag it along. I also don't plan on being inside unless the weather is crap.

I cant wait to hit RA again. its the only track arount the mighty TL gets to let it all hang out at 170mph+

I will be at the track tomorrow and sunday as a spectator this time

Hey All

I hope everyone has recovered successfully from the June 2nd WRS "meeting" that Corey and I hosted. I am happy to report that we were able to get down a little more than 5 1/2 cases of beer, consume 16 chickens, one smoked trout, and tons of snacks. I commend everyone for this successful endeavor. We were happy to meet new people, talk with seasoned veterans, and of course showing the tanks!

A couple weeks ago I begged some companies to send us a few small things to raffle off at our meeting and a couple places came through. I would like to thank Dennis and Anita over at Sharky's Reef 888 E Belvidere Rd UNIT 101 Grayslake, IL 60030 for sending a $25 gift certificate, won by Jon "hahnmeister." Additionally Foster and Smith also sent a $25 gift certificate won by Jeremy "cschwaj." In addition to the gift certificate everyone who signed up on the list will be getting a $5 coupon and wonderful catalog, courtesy of F&S. Thanks Foster and Smith. Also, I would like to thank Marineland Aquarium Products for sending a 1.87L container of carbon won by Paul Law.

Thorium, I dont know the name, but it was a little ****-Zhu that the trout-kissing dachshund rescuer had brought over later. Tiny little thing with white and grey streaked hair... didnt catch the name though.

I have a question for you that you might be able to answer though. Ive been doing research on skimmers as far as ORP levels and oxygenation's effect on protein extraction.

Quick Q for you... is there anything out there about how proteins respond to ORP and oxygenation as far as being able to be more hydrophobic? It seems that O3 generators work in this way... not just being more attractive to the same proteins, but perhaps converting less hydrophobic molecules into more by oxygenation. Is this something able to be looked into? Would a higher ORP in a skimmer result in more types of proteins being able to be collected?

Maybe Anita and I have to come over again and she can see the little puppy for herself... while I sneak into your reef tank and break off a few chunks of some acros on the left end of your tank.

-There is a ton covered on this subject. I know there is a lot of research going on right now involving ozone therapy and certain diseases. There is a lot of effort in the area of denaturing virions with ozone. If you really want to do a power search, take advantage of UWM’s subscription to Web of Science. Very powerful search tool, accessible from any computer on campus. It will allow you to search specific references in literature on the key words you specify. This will bring up journals that have articles on the subject matter.

I don’t know that the O3 allows more proteins to be collected as foam. If the proteins are live, the O3 being a powerful oxidant would most likely denature them. Now if this makes them more hydrophobic or less and does it result in a more efficient collection of proteins â€"œI don’t know. It’s a good question though.

Thanks for the pointer Josh. According to a skimmer test I saw a while back, the recirculating skimmers performed better due to the extended time in the chamber changing (raising?) the skimmer's ORP inside. The theory behind why recirc skimmers took out so much more (among other more mechanical reasons like a bigger pump on a smaller body) was to do with how the ORP might have made more proteins succeptable to being hydrophobic... sort of like using ozone.
