Junior's 300 Reef Build

Well the reactor arrived today.....

Unfortunately FedEx decided to play soccer with it at the sorting facility.

The base was snapped right off.

Fortunately, dealing with an awesome company like Reef Mania, its all getting taken care of.

Bob is building me another one from scratch. No fixing, or modding the broken one. Also, was so nice to hear he is going to deal with Fedex, and start building a new one.

He could have told me to call fedex and good luck, but he didn't. Stand up guy, and great work too.

The pieces that in tact are built like a tank, and a really awesome design.

Im bummed its going to be another few weeks, but hey...patience is everything in this hobby.

Jr. looking good so far! That to bad about the reactor, been there and done that. At least he taking care of you, save alot of headache not hqaving to deal with the shipping company claims.

here are the pics of the broken reactor =(

The box the base it sitting on is 40" long for size reference.

...now back to work i go...

Alright, finally got my sump vessel figured out.

I found a HUGE stock tank. Its just under 360 gallons.

Its a 10' x 3' x 20" Quite possibly the perfect sump for this setup.

Very excited i finally worked out that detail. Now i can finally start pushing forward the build.

Well, i keep going back and forth about the lighting setup.

Im kinda leaning toward the Sfiligoi Stealth 12 x 80w T5 Pendant. Actively cooled w/ glass shield.

Really nice look fixture.

Do you guys thing that would be enough light for a 72 x 36 tank? 6 inches on each side wouldnt have light right over the tank, but i dont think that an issue. could always add a retro if i really needed it.

Just curious, why not consider an ATI?? Price wise much cheaper and there are already plenty of users out there??

I would in a heart beat, except i HATE the fact that on a 10 bulb unit, 8 bulbs are on one switch, and 2 on another.

Why they wouldnt do 6 and 4 be beyond me....

Also, i dont believe they make a 60" fixture.

They make a 60" fixture, but I also don't understand why they have the light switches like that either.

I think its cause they used only 2-3 ballast to light up their whole fixture. Would presume not difficult to wire in another 2 ballast?? Only problem is the add ballast might not fit inside their fixture itself so if you can find a way to run the wiring neatly down to the stand would be great!!

However, just curious, why would you want so many on/off switches for the fixture?? SunSet/ Rise set-up?? Or you don't intend to fire all bulbs at the same time for electricity saving??

Sunset/ rise set-up can still be achieve with their dimmable version??

ATI is making a 60" fixture now I believe. Also, check out the Sfiligoi units. My 12x54w Stealth has 3 groups of 4 bulbs, which makes for a nice gradual sunrise/sunset.

Geisseman also makes some T5 units that are basically identically to the Sfiligois, so I'd assume they have 3 groups of 4 on their 12-bulb fixtures.

Junior I just saw those Acan pictures of yours, and I am absolutely speechless!!! I love the style of tank and general setup you're going with. I'm stuck following this one for sure. Good Luck! Keep the pictures coming for those of us who can't read lol.

Ed,

I dont need more than 2 switches. I only want there to be more bulbs on the other switch. 6 on one, 4 on the other.

Thats why im thinking of going with the sfiligoi, because they are more evenly distributed amongst the switches. I really want to be able to run more than 2 bulbs day lights. But i could never so only 2 actinics either. So unless ATI would be willing to do a 10 x 80w, with the switches split 6 and 4 i would go with ATI.

Although, as silly as it may sound, i like the glass shield much more than the plexi one. i think ATI uses the plexi shield.
