Junior's 300 Reef Build

Well Ive been doing some thinking about how im going to set everything up, and had an idea about the initial setup.

The standard 300 is the standard duel corner overflows that are obviously drilled through the bottom.

In terms of building the stand, and getting all the pluming the way i want it, it is going to make it a PITA to get everything the way I want it. The sump is not going to be under the tank, but off to the side, for easier access, and also in better position to have my grow out tank plumbed together with the main system.

My thought is to cut out the overflows, and just plug the holes in the bottom with low profile bulkheads and cap them.

Then, drilling the back with 2 2" drains with a 36" long overflow box. This would only need to be at the most 6" tall from the top of the tank.

Giving back my corners, and leaving the entire footprint of the tank open for aquascaping.

I decided i was drilling the tank for a closed loop with a hammerhead pump anyways, so i dont see any reason not to do it this way.

Does anyone have an opinion on this? I think it will actually be a nicer clean look too.

I'm a big fan of the external overflow - if you are comfortable with your drilling skills then definitely go for it.

Well it would still be internal, but it would take up way less room. The biggest advantage I see would be the plumbing off the back instead of bottom.

You'll have no prob installing the other one if you go that route... the one you did on your 180 looks perfect!

My only thought is that wouldn't it take up more room on the back-side of the tank - which is how you'll access the tank because it's in-wall? It might be a PITA to plumb going through the bottom and under the stand to the sump, but it'll be out of your way.

I might be way off with my thoughts ... show me tomorrow :D

I thought about that Austin, but im already going to have a hammerhead, all the plumbings and the OM 4 way in the way so i dont think it makes much of a difference at this point.

Plus, i opens the possibility to have put two tunze wave boxes back corners.

Well I am one step closer to getting this beast going. My current holding tanks are in the worst possible spot, and are keeping me from being able to frame out the remaining walls of the new fish room.

The next step was to setup the new frag system, let it run for a bit, and then move all corals and fish in, and take down the old one. I ran into $ issues, and have not been able to order the new frag tanks, but came up with a solution.

I had bought an acrylic 180 from a local reefer that was pretty beat up, which i was going to make a sump from. After changing my mind on that, it was just collecting dust.

This weekend my friend Austin (stunreefer) came over and we cut it down to only 16" tall, remounted the top, and then cut out the top like a eurobrace. I will add a middle support in a couple days, but youll get the idea.

Ordering a buffing kit today or tomorrow, and once its cleaned up, ill get it plumbed and running.

This should allow me to get the 300 going by early April if all goes to plan.

Here is the new frag system. 72" x 24" x 16"

Well after months of planning, and figuring out what is going where, and how its all going to go together, here is (i hope) the final drawing.

There will be a large shelf over both sumps, but left it out of the drawing so the rest of the room could be seen.

Total system volume should be right around 600 gallons. Then an additional 120-150 gallons in the retail unit that im going to use for new fish, and other cool inverts that i cant keep in the display, i.e. mantis shrimp, arrow crabs, etc...

Somewhere in the mix will be an additional small QT system for corals and fish.

Probably just a couple biocubes.

Just a couple equipment updates..

Picked up a Darg Gold pump for the return for all tanks.

Also ordered my GIANT calcium reactor today.

Its a duel chamber Reef Mania CR600.

Its has an 8" x 24" main chamber, and a 4.5" x 24" effluent chamber.

Its holds around 60 lbs of media...should handle the 800 gallons without flinching.

sweet, following along. lmk if you want to set me up w/ a pack of lords, junior :) i'd be happy to contribute to the new tank fund

Well a few pieces of equipment are in the works.

Here is some pics Bob over at Reef Mania sent me of my reactor being built.

Bob was amazing to deal with. Went above and beyond, and was excellent on communication. Something that all to often in this hobby is a problem.

Here are some pics he sent me. Ill get some more when it arrives, to show to massive scale of this beast.
