Junior's 300 Reef Build

Well after several years of growing out my prized corals, its time for a REAL diplay.

I went with a Marineland Deep Dimensions 300 gallon, with starphire front.

It is bein built in wall, in my new fish room.

Ok, so i was tired of seeing everyone with their cool CAD drawings of all the systems...so i downloaded Google Sketch, and had some fun. Be nice, its my first time doing anything even close to 3D CAD.

The drawing is crude, but you get the idea.

First, the section with the skimmer will be where the display tank, frag tank, and turn key water change return line will tie in.

The second, will be the fuge.

The third will be the return pump intake, heater, and any other media bla bla bla.

You will notice that there is plumbing going into each baffled area. These will have 90 degree elbows, facing up, with strainers in both the fuge and skimmer area. All will have ball valves coming right out of the bulkhead. A feed line in each baffled area is needed so each area will drain. Otherwise the return area would drain, leaving the other completely full.....not making for a very big water change.

The Return pump will be a hammerhead or similar with strong head pressure. There will be a manifold with 4 lines. 2 returning to the display, 1 to the frag tank, and a 4th for turn key water change.

The ball valves will all be opened when doing a water change to allow more water to be drawn from the sump. The return lines will all be closed except the 4th line, that will "return" the water directly to the laundry sink, on the other side of the basement.

Then valves in the fuge, and skimmer areas will be closed back up.

There will also be 60 gallon or larger storage container with a small external pump that will circulate salt water until ready. It will be split into 2 return lines. One going back into the storage tank, and one that will tie into the drain area of the sump. The recirculation valve will be closed, and the return valve opened. Feeding fresh saltwater right back into the sump.

There you have it. Flip a few valves, and instant water change.

The return area of the sump is farthest away only because where everything is going to be located, its easier to bring the drain lines into a common corner, rather than clutter up the area below the tank. Which would limit access to the fuge, and skimmer.

Here is a quick drawing of what my light rack will look like. A few cross braces are missing, but you get the idea.

It will hold 3 luminarcs, and 8 36" T5's...also, if i can fit them, a couple profilux simulight bars.

The entire rack will be on a motorized pulley system.

Nice drawings so far Jr. I cant wait to see more. If you need any help in the coming weeks let me know I can swing by. I still need to come grab that Lobo anyway ;)

The sump is looking like it will be custom made, and will get a total overhaul on design.

That was my plan for using an existing 180 acrylic tank.

However, to remove the top, add thicker stock for eurobracing, and baffles, I might as well buy a brand new one.

So anyone who has a sweet sump design, feel free to post it up here.

Flow for the tank will done with the new tunze's controlled by a profilux controller, or Vortechs....undecided at this point. Maybe a combo of both.

Skimming will be handled by either an ATB large, or BK300 internal.

Much more details to come.

Gotta get back to work.

Very impressive first time sketchup work.

On the light rack, you could use 4 80w bulbs instead of 8 39w bulbs...will save you about $100 every time you replace the bulbs. And I do have to throw it out there...have you considered going all T5? A 12x80w would be awesome on this setup.

Looking great whatever you decide, I'm subscribing.

Also, the skimmer choices look awesome - I would add the BK Supermarin 300 to the list as well.

Here is a link to my 100g sump that sits under a 5x3 tank, I think the design has worked out well...for your setup, I'd extend it a foot and maybe make it a few inches taller so its 150g, and add the space for the skimmer in between the return and the fuge. http://www.reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=1271003&perpage=25&pagenumber=7

Since you are in Michigan, if you are looking for somebody to build your sump, and would be willing to drive to Chicago for pickup, I highly recommend Doug Lehman (RC name Douglas Lehman)...he does awesome work, and is reasonably priced. He built my 100g out of 1/2" acrylic for $670, for reference. And prices may have gone down a bit too, since the cost of acrylic is tied to the cost of oil.

I know melev's work is top notch, but I'll put the quality of Doug's work up against anyone...depending on where in MI you are, he is a short drive away:

looks very nice.

Ive got a major acrylic manufacturer a couple hours from me called IPI. they make some some great stuff. But if I dont like what i hear from them, ill be sure to let you know...well let him know...

thanks very much.

JR-tell us more about the retro T5 set up you plan to use, I may want to bite and toss my vho's -
Also, any thoughts on what kind of halides you'll run in the LAs? SE/DE, brand and spectrum, 250/400? :D

not at all sure. Im thinking about going with profilux ballasts (dimmable) with sunlight supply's new T5 reflectors and end caps.

otherwise just a standard sunlight supply retro kit 36 x 8.

Then without a doubt, an army of 22k aqua science bulbs.

im talking to the light gurus now in the lighting forum.

I was originally going to go 3 x radium 400's, but they are saying they get about 6 months out of a bulb....ouch

so im thinking about a few different options. Ive liked what ive read about the happy reefing 12k bulbs....crazy intense....i want a bright bright bright tank...

photography being a big part of the hobby for me, its important.

I like what I've seen from reeflux bulbs... just curious why are you going with the AS 22ks? The ATI Blue Plus bulbs give the same appearance, but have slightly better PAR according to Grim: http://tfivetesting.googlepages.com/par Do you think they look different? Maybe I'm missing something...

I'd also suggest a few actinics as the 22k or blue plus don't have the UV spectrum that makes your greens pop out.

Well the tank is scheduled to arrive Thursday.

I talked my LFS into having the delivery routed to my office, where I have a warehouse with a fork lift.

At least for now, I have an easy way of lifting it=)

Will make the move into the house hopefully by the weekend, or the next.

Looks like an awesome tank!

Was this a standard tank for Marineland or are you having it custom made?
