Just another 120 tech build

Try a yellow headed sleeper goby to clean the sand. I lost 3 diamond gobies before trying the yellow head. I have had it 6 months or so and it's belly is fat! It also stays in the bottom 6 inches of the tank, not to say that it will not jump, but so far so good!

I agree with more rock. I don't want the tank stuffed with it, but I'm not happy with the center. Maybe I could re-arrange the rock to slope downward to where it doesn't look so empty in the center. The tank fund is on E right now. I need to recover from all the startup costs for a month or two.

I bought 24 Nassarius snails yesterday and another diamond goby. I have a black mesh taped to the top right now. My plan was to keep it there for a week or two untill the goby is more used to the tank, but I really like that clear mesh Julie mentioned. Anyone know where to find that stuff? I think I"ll try and make a frame to encase the rim of the 120 with that clear mesh for a more permanent solution. Then I can get a wrasse as well, which I'd really like a Leapard Wrasse.

I will keep the yellow headed sleeper goby in mind for the future incase I have another goby mishap. I appreciate you chiming in here Kraash since you're one of the few people I've met in the club. I do plan on a pizza night at some point, I promise.

I have changed the one of the blue special bulbs to a true actinic, but I'm contemplating switching back. The blue special still gives a glow in the evening and it has the little more blue look in the day. The pictures aren't perfect with color. The camera really pics up on the blue with the auto setting and I haven't gotten the white balance adjusted just right yet. My sister is a professional photographer, so when she gets some time, I hope to have her snap a few pics.

What about my skimmer questions, anyone have any pics / advice?

The rock amount looks good. I slowly add rock over time to my collection while everyone else feels like they need their perfect landscaping on setup day. Over time, just make trips to the LFS and look for a piece that would fit your collection.

As for the skimmer, you don't feel your getting enough skimmate on this new setup? Or you think something is wrong with the skimmer?

I got my mesh from the guy in that post. Send him an email, or a pm. I also think he might advertise on ebay. He will sell you just what you need.

I'm going to have to stick to a craigslist budget when it comes to live rock. I did see a huge piece in there a few weeks back though. I'm in the $3 / lb type of range if I can find something suitable.

Here's another question... what are folks using for topoff containers. I need to get an ATO system going and I don't have room in my stand. I saw a 18 gallon rubbermaid container that I clould use but I wanted to research if it would leech chemicals into the water real bad first. I think I'm going to have to build a box next to the tank to hold RO water and dosing chemicals, etc. Not something I like, but I need more storage.

I understand this but the rock is also an important chain in the bio filtration. Not enough bacteria built up can cause problems, especially in a brand new tank. Problem is that you wouldnt have problems right away, your levels would slowly rise as you add fish and or feed these fish. So where you may not add every piece of rock the very first day you would definitly want to make sure that you have enough to support your bio load. Which brings me to me next question, and excuse me if you already stated this earlier in the thread but how many pounds of rock is that? It could be 120 and just not look like it.

Well from my experience not enough rock can cause issues, the rock is the heartbeat of your filtration. I would have at least a pound per gallon just to start, then add to your liking and tweak your masterpiece. I know you don't want to lose that beautiful powder blue tang.

I'm not using any type of phosban. I am using RO water. I inherited a tiny bit of hair algae on the live rock I got and when I added the bacteria like the LFS recommended is when I got the bloom. Since then things have been receeding. The snails and PBT have eaten most of the soft hair algae, now all I have left is this really tough stuff. (Can't hardly even prune it.)

You guys did get me thinking I need to do something about my rock so I completely changed it around today. I'll plan on adding more rock later before adding any more fish. 4 fish with 70lb of live rock and 140g of water should be good for the time being. It will have to do for now. I'll post more pics of the re-scape later tonight.

Can I take a poll from those following this thread, how many pounds of live rock to water content do people keep?

i am with angler i have always tried to keep at the very least a pound per gallon of water. it does not have to be in the display.

Here's a pic of my skimmer after cleaning the cup. Notice I've got it closed off almost completely to get the water near the top.

I'm realizing how crappy my camera is and how hard it is to get good pictures of a fish tank.
