Just another 120 tech build

i'd wait on the rbta until your tank matures a little, less stress on them less stress on you. ;)

from what i've read 8 to 12 months before adding one.

Ahh man. No rain on my RBTA parade. Do others agree with this? What about 8-12 months changes to make a tank more mature? My thoughts have been as long as your water parameters are right and you've gone though a cycle, a living organism that you can feed should be fine. Why would that not be true?

i thought the same thing an bought a green bta only a coulpe months after adding fish and it perished slowly over the next couple of months. i now have two rbta i added after being established for a little over eight months and they have been doing great and growing like crazy. hopefully others can give thoughts. there is alot of info about this out there, i would suggest doing your homework first to save headachs later

check this one out lots of good info

So I have some sweet relief to my waterfall sounds. I raised my durso's up a bit so the waterlevel is higher. The problem is I can't put the overflow lid on. I know it's not a huge deal, but I was wondering if I could drill holes higher in the durso's so that I can lower them enough to get the cap on and still keep the water level high. Is this going be oK? Anything I'm not thinking of? Here's a pic of what it looks like with them raised.

Got a LaMotte alkalinity test kit in the mail today. 6.4 dkH. I've been under the assumption that the alkalinity was between 7 and 8 with my ELOS kit. I now own 3 alkalinity test kits and I'm going to use Nanook's advice about the LaMotte being the best. Time to start dosing. (BRS Recipe 2).

Any advice about the above picture and drilling the dursos? I'm going to switch to flex tube return plumbing this weekend along with a WC.

Nice looking tank.Great start I would defiantly wait on a RBTA I mean your taking a big risk if you put one in this soon it could die and nuke your tank if your tank has been up and running only a few months I personally wouldn't have risked a powder blue.I hate rain on you parade but just take your time and wait it will save you $$$ in the long run believe me I know been there before.GOOD LUCK hope to see ya at anther pizza night.:)

Thanks Chris. I realize now how much of a risk the PBT was. I have decided to wait on the RBTA. Next addition will be a frag or two from the frag swap. Let me know if you're ever going to be on this side of the river.

I'm thinking of replacing the whole durso with something better. Does anyone know of something better that I can easily make or buy?

Logiktest, I'm no sure I can do that cause of the weird connector the caps use...

Do you have a picture of your stand pipes? I'm envisioning PVC with holes in the side and a cap with a small hole for air. What I did to my dursos was about the dumbest thing I could have done. My brain is plumbing challenged.

Just four pcs of PVC the same length stuffed in the bulk heads. Super simple. But I have a fish room so noise is not a factor to me, but they do not really make any noise.

Well that seems simple enough. I'll be hitting the ole HD today then. Next house will have a fish room! Or a tank like ScubaDiver where I just plumb it through the floor. I think I'll have to start mentioning that plumbing through the floor thing to my wife. I could expand the system in a few years to have a big frag tank, etc.

If you want something low profile and almost completely silent you can try a hoffer gurgle buster. If you google the term you'll find multiple plans. Simple to make and almost no noise. I use it on my 75 at the moment.

Thought I'd post some new pics. Got some rock, coral, and clams from jbarone. Things are doing well. Had to pick off some bubble algae and I've got about 3 Majanos that I need to kill, but can't complain at that price.

I should probably read the whole thread but how much rock is in there?

Thats a nice rock with the eagle eyes and clam.

I'm up to approximately 105 - 110 lbs. I'll probably still get some more. I have three really big pieces of rock. Lots of holes in them, but it doesn't allow me to do a lot of stacking.

More rain for your parade.... I got a rbta about three months into a new tank, did good, settled in, attached it's foot well, looked happy. Sat in the same place for about three days. Then one day...no rbta....powerhead suicide. $130 lesson, I'd wait I'm at the 8 mo mark and gonna try again.

I rearranged some rock again. The way I had it, everything was at the same height and then taking pictures looking down at the rock makes it look like there's not much in there. I'll get some new pics tomorrow when the lights are on.

Also fixed the drain where it enters the water which has helped with the noise. Halleluja! Tomorrow I'm going to try and tackle the Hoffer Gurgle Buster.

Getting a peppermint shrimp tomorrow for the Mojanos and a few frags on Sunday, so busy weekend for the tank.
