just ordered a Ritteri !!!

fullmonti

now is the time
well I did it I just ordered from liveaquaria a nice Ritteri, wanted one for a long time.

I have a 180 sps tank with strong alternating flow & strong MH light so I think that will be fine. Have good spot to put a rock for him to attach to, nothing near by to sting. I'm hoping he will not go on a walk about. I understand I should turn off closed loop till he attaches.

Other than being excited & wanting to tell some one, the reason for this post is to ask for any words of wisdom you might have for a nem noobee?

It's coming thursday so words of wisdom sooner is better. & thanks in advance!

Did you get the 12 inch one or the 18 incher. Ive been waiting to buy a new nem from them just waiting for the right one to come along. I'm looking for a crispa. the one they had i didnt like.

Iv had one for 3 weeks now going on 4
Mine is directly under my 175w metal halide and hasn't moved once since I got him. He was doing fine until about a week ago when it deflated for about 4 hours(it look like it was about to die I almost pulled it out) but then it was fine afterwards not sure why it deflated but I did a water change and it seemed to help.
Mine doesn't really like alot of flow it seems happiest when its tentacles are swaying just a little bit. I dont spot feed it, it will catch small pieces of shrimp and cyclopeeze when I feed my clowns. They also feed the nem. I have been dosing iodine weekly since I read it helps the anemone and so far everything is fine.Thats just my expierience with it others might do things differently just figured i'd give my opinion.
I know 4 weeks isnt much of a success story but it seems to be doing fine and its a really nice anemone. I hope I have it for a long time. Goodluck with yours and keep us posted!

I saw the one you purchased last night. Nice! I liked the yellow tips. The best of luck to you!

thanks! but no ritteri info for me?

they will walk to where flow and lighting suit them... usually not a nice view lol ie foot on the front glass. even if you get one to stay in a nice visual spot , they can and often change their mind and move. I assume your parameters have been stable at least 6 months?
water quality is paramount with ritteri s
do not require daily feedings... can even be detimental to the animal.

wait until it is sufficiently established and sticky before feeding
i dont like feeding silversides due to the waste maybe others will give their opinion ...
I vary with a mysis, cyclops mixture , or shrimp pieces or even fresh scallop pieces

hope some of this helped

SG should be in the 1.025-1.027 range. H. magnificas appreciate regular feedings with fresh seafoods including silversides, shrimp, squid, krill, etc. I believe the greatest challenge to success is getting one that is in good shape to begin with. Temp should be in the 80-82F range. Maintain good water quality with regular water changes, protein skimming, activated carbon, etc.

They need bright light and will move to brightest area in the tank. They also need good water movement and thus often move to where the water flow is (like Power Head)
I like to put them under a MH on a island of rock, high up. At this place they will get good flow, high light and if they move away from the top, the light drop off dramatically and flow lessen. In this situation, they will stay where they are and will do well.
Here is a thread about one of my H. magnifica. I have keep a few since about 1999.

anemones will move to suitable light.. depending on your lighting they may move to bright light areas or shaded.. the point is, anemones move! i have seen several anemones grow fast and move often.. I had to surround mine with smaller movable rocks so i could more easily control where it was..

deangelr,
Generic statemet like "anemone move to where ever it like" is not helpful. If you know the need of a particular anemone species, you can set your tank up so that the danger of a moving anemone, to itself and to other animals, is minimal.
For H. magnifica, using my method, I keep my anemone from moving. I have never seen a H. magnifica move to lower light. They need very bright light like right under a 400 W MH. I have lots of PH in my tank (see my thread above) and my anemone was never in danger of chewing up by my PH.

display part of my tank is 4' 6" & have 2 400w & 1 250w MH, his rock is mid tank so I hoping that will suit. Liveaquaria had 8.1-8.4 for PH, mine runs 8.2 at night 8.3+ day shouldn't need more than that do you think?

thanks every one, let me know if any thinks of any other wisdom they want to pass on!

how can you tell

how can you tell

new nem, tank + 10 minutes. He all ready has perked up some in last few mins.

So how can I tell when he has attached, so I can turn closed loop back on.

If they do move is it more likely to do so at night or day?

I missed the notice that all of sat. posts would be lost, so I'll try to recreate the short version. He had marched of is island I made him because he could touch rocks near him.
(named him Sherman for the mach) Any way this is his new smaller island.

nemisand.jpg

He could just touch rocks on the left, & was thinking about turning loose & making a break.

I moved his island over just a bit so he couldn't touch any more. it took awhile but he marched around to other side of island.

Once he got to right side he could just barely touch rocks on right. He spent hours trying to work up courage to let go & make the leap, but just to scary.

He's been there for 2 days now, deflated most of yesterday little better today. Don't know why he hasn't climbed back to the top yet.

Sorry we lost all those posts, there was some good info.
Waiting & watching now.

Sherman is moving because he is unhappy. Is there a way you can make the island taller, to see if he just wants more light?

For now, I recommend that you just get a vase or a tall glass and put a rock on top of it. Keep it like that until the anemone is healthier.

It looks like if he wanted more light he would go as high as he could now.

Liveaquaria said they had him in a 16" tank with 250w MH 18" above tank.
He is about 18" from surface with a 400wMH about 8-10" above tank. I would think he has at least as much light now then he had there?

I had thought maybe since he stayed where he is was because it is some what sheltered? It's obvious I'm no expert, you really think he needs more light?
