Just ordered Canon 50D

Thew most expensive. I think the sexiest lens of all time is the 85mm f/1.2
It can be yours for just under $2,000.
Only a very small fraction of what you are taking a picture of will be in focus.
If you were taking a picture of someone's face, their nose and everything closer to the camera may be blurry. Their ears and everything farther from the camera may be blurry. That leaves their eyes and maybe lips in good sharp focus.

If you use flash, you can get their entire body in the shot. There are always compromises in photography. Flash is expensive but f/1.2 lenses are more expensive. Unfortunately it is a lot better to have both (very expensive) than it is to have just one or the other.

A one of the 50mm lenses and the 100mm f/2.8 lol
TS, I'd find it a lot more helpful if in addition to your cyber guffaw could please post your thinking.

Here was the rational behind my posting. The man asked for a couple starter lenses for aquarium, maybe macro shots and shots of new son. The 100mm Canon macro handles both those last two pretty well, though might be a bit of a budget stretcher. That leaves one lens for more general purpose applications, preferrably something less expensive. The classic general purpose less expensive starter lens is something in the 50mm range.

I'm sure you have better suggestions, but why is that laughable?

Thanks.

No I was saying "A 50mm f/1.4 or f/1.8 and a 100mm f/2.8 would do what you want" ...which is laughable because it was exactly what the OP bought. I never even read your post...as we submitted our ideas for a 50mm and 100mm the same minute.

Sorry, guys not trying to confuse, I'm just kind of joining the OP thread there, not trying to hijack it...just trying to gather up what I should buy...for my picture type situations etc.

How legit are places like this?
http://soniccameras.com/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=5654&gclid=CKi-5LHAy5kCFRINDQodshOrtQ

It looks very sketchy, Christmas decor still up etc...just wondered.

If you check that store with Resellerratings.com you'll find that they're basically con artists.

The store that TS recommended will have the lowest or very close to the lowest legitimate price that you can find on the net.

Thanks, I figured it was. I have B&H's catalog at home!

Can I ask what you Canon guys think of the 40D vs. 50D and what the differences are and which is better for the reef shots and stuff I mentioned?

Also I was told to look at some lenses with a low f stop...like a f/1.8 or f/1.4 as they are better with the natural night and no flash?

That's what I love about my f/1.4. I use it all the time for the no flash aspect. I agree with Titus that there are times when it's good to use the flash, but I definitely feel that there are times when things look a lot better without it.

I wouldn't want a 24-70 with IS. It doesn't need it and the elements clanking around would be more annoying than helpful. If I am shooting beyond f/8, I am using a tripod anyway.

I know I'm not alone in the Canon world in wanting one with IS, and there are definitely times when I'm hand-holding that it would be nice to have, especially at the longer end.

I looked at the 40D and then decided on the 50D for a couple reasons, including the enhanced display and live view which is awesome for stationary corals but worthless anywhere you can't take the time to focus manually.

So, is that one of the things Nikon fans hang over Canon fans, their lenses don't have it or have as many lenses with it right? Is that changing or is that still true? I've held the 50D and D300 and like the 50D in my hand, without knowing all the technical differences in the two, I've heard the D300 is a tad above, but the feel of the 50D wins for me, and I'm sure the major differences aren't that major are they?

Sorry, but that's tripe.

You sure know how to make a guy feel bad TS...jeez.

:(

I will wait to see if my company does anymore layoffs in my organization around April 15th as rumored, before I make any big purchases such as this. To be on the safe side.

The reason(s) I have gravitated towards the 5DMII is because I was shopping the 50D and then also starting to look at consumer HD camcorders. Particularly the VIXIA line of Canon's high end consumer models. Well, comparing the video samples online at Vimeo.com, the IQ of the 5DMII videos vs. any of the others I could find, was really no comparison. The IQ just blew everything away, hands down, and with the choices of lenses out there, the possibilities are endless and up to your imagination.

Now I know the 5DMII has its limitations with time limits on each take you do, but that works perfectly with how I had visioned my creativity in home video making. Short takes of super HD clips put together with music in some software package to make an entertaining home movie is what I'm planning to do with my home movies. I can't stand home video that are made up of hours of continuous video that is usually fast forwarded through. So the video and how it works in the DSLR is right up my alley. Its a perfect combo for me.

I get a step up in DSLR camera, a nice FF high quality image, and I'm able to shoot awesome HD video and use my creativity to make home movies in a unique way.

Sure if I went out and bought one of Canon's Pro series video recorders, I could match the IQ of the 5DMII, but those start at over $3000 - $9000...so thats not realistic for me right now. If I ever moved into real film making, maybe, but thats not my plan right now. So what better combo than a 5DMII and some good starter lenses?
