Depending on the reactor. Up flow reactors(like GFO reactors) have a tendency to "bubble" the media. With carbon this could cause it to grind into dust. I prefer a down flow reactor that holds the carbon tight by down flowing the water through it(just reverse the input/output lines on a typical reactor).
Even passively in a bag in a high flow area of your sump is better then inside your filter sock.
BRS did a nice video(pretty sure you can find it on youtube) a while back showing the difference between running carbon in a filter bag Vs. in a reactor if your curious.
