Just wondering if anyone has/had a piece of the Acropora echinata...

Here you go, it does great to both your tank and wallet.

That thread is painfull to read, every picture of the original mother colony isn't shown, nor Sand Dollars.......considering the lore are reputation of this piece, it would be cool to see a picture of the original mother colony that Aquascene had......or have I already and not realized it Karl? You must have one floating around?

cool, thanks man!..

sorry for the little highjack guys :D ..

It was the Thread of the Month from this month's Reefkeeping online mag :). Definitely an interesting read. Still can't decide if we are going to give it a go or not. So far we don't have the issues that were noted that it helps with, but the overall "water quality" comments are enticing :). Our lighting costs about $3 per day to run, so that is almost a ten-spot to keep them off for 3 days, but not really enough by itself to justify the excercise :).

I do not recall any pics of the OG colony that James had. Maybe cached on his old site.

We are going to be moving our frag up off of the sand bed this weekend... any advice on placement for lighting and waterflow ?

I have mine in the prop tank under about an inch of water. 20k 250w Radium down low over the tank. I've got moderate flow in that spot. Probably could use more.

I've had it about 1/3 down in my 72g before. Didn't color well there.

wow, that much light, huh ? Guess I will go higher than our original plan and see what happens. I just wanted to make sure that we don't screw anything up with this coral :). Too expensive and way to hard to come by.

Tom has yours encrusted yet, the one I got from Ben finally did after a week and half in my tank. I have them up high with indirect flow. Is yours blue/purple through out, mine are cream/white with blue tips.
I have to agree that it's one of the most expensive frags I've ever paid for, but hats off to Ben who also included frags of superman monti and purple monster at no cost.

By the way, how have the frags you got from me been doing, I hope they have encrusted by now.

ours so far is blue/purple throughout. I hope that we got what we were after and that it colors up "properly" eventually, although any echinata should be nice.. the ice/fire one (cream/blue) was what we wanted. Ours is still on the bottom of our tank (still pretty high light, comparatively). I will check to see if it is encrusting yet, but the last time I check I did not see that it had.

I do have a pic of the original colony, but I feel I shouldn't post it since it's not mine. It basically looks like Ben's piece, though;)

The more I look at the various pcture in this thread the one we got doesn't look like hte same as the cream/blue echinata out there (referred to as the ice/fire on a couple of sites). I am not even talking about color, but the growth pattern just looks different to me. I did hear that there were several echinatas that came out of Aquascene, I suppose that the one we got was from a different strain/line ? Any thoughts on that speculation ?

Caveat:

I have a mini colony that's about a foot lower than the main colony, and it's the same color. So, I don't think lighting is as important as flow. Although, the blue tips were more intense under my Ushio bulbs. Not so much with the Helios I'm running now.

Thanks Karl...I am procrastinating moving it up currently because we plan to bring the new skimmer online this weekend and I am hoping for a cleaner, more clean tank/water column. So to avoid any additional shock from clearer water (more light penetration) I was going to wait until I had a better guage of how the tank will reacto to the new skimmer (and the suqsequent plumbing changes, that should also help to minimize/eliminate any current micro-bubble issues).

Hi Tom-

Rest assured it is the original Aquascene true echinata. The original mother colony was a cream with blue tip color but had just come off an 18+ hour plane flight. The original colony was not much larger than a golf ball when James fragged for me. My colony has taken on the 'fire and ice' morph from time to time but usually only when something was wrong with the tank chemistry. I personally believe the 'normal' and probably original color is green core with blue tips/corallites sometimes extending down the branch. That said I was able to get about 6 frags out there in different tanks so we will see what colors others experience.

maybe/hopefully some of those people can chime in here for placement and colors :)

You had it pretty hight up yourself, but how was it for water flow in your tank Erik ?

Probably less than 8" from surface under 400w 14K Reeflux on PFO HQI. 1 foot away from about 3500 gal/hr flow. Still did not prevent core from STN which was the reason I fragged the 4 -5 inch colony I had. I will probably never let it get that size again because despite the high flow the colony still choked itself with dense growth pattern.

I have had it for a few weeks and is responding well to being placed 4-6" below water line directly under a 250W DE that is another 6" off the water. I have had good luck getting "problem children" to color up in this spot and am testing it out here to see what I can get from it as I was told it likes and can tolerate higher light.

Too soon to tell, but is developing a higher contrast between the blue and white, but my other colors are a bit faded (BB tank and got busy with school).......when I get the whole sytem back in tune I will get back to you......my goal is to get it like the pic Karl has been teasing us all with.

I sometimes wonder if my Ushio 14k had the same sort of 'funny effect' that Reeflux 10k has? Since I'm running the Helios now, my pics just come out entirely blue:mad:

For reference, here's how it looks in a pitch black room with just camera flash only:
