Kalk dosing questions

should I dose every day? or just test ph/alk every days and dose when needed?
with all the sps I have added,my alk has been dropping like a rock in my 60g cube..

I did a 15g wc change today about 6 hours ago,come home and my purple,green and orange montipora are bleaching wile another orange piece is fine..Also one acropora branch is bleaching..All other sps and all lps are fine..

For dosing right now I am using a 1gallon water jug with 2 teaspoons of Kalk powder,I am using a aqua lifter with the out going tube crimped to allow about 1 drip per second..

does the kalk drip drop salinity because of a reaction?Or is it because I am adding more RO water than usual?

All params are right on besides the alk

kalkwasser = limewater is used as makeup for evaporation. In other words:
use kalkwasser instead of RO water to replace evaporated water.

Diluting saltwater with any type of freshwater (whether it's limewater, RO or straight from the tap) will decrease salinity BUT if you're simply matching evaporation rates the salinity will remain constant.

FWIW I've noted some extremely high evaporation rates in the last 24 hours. The atmosphere must be really dry. Just a guess.
 
Gary, the atmosphere is indeed, very dry. bitter cold weather depletes the moisture in the air and makes your furnace run more...double whammy. (top off taking a bit more this past week)

Agreed with what Gary said,replace all evaporated water with limewater.

The bleaching of the corals you mentioned are probably related to your ALK. Use baking soda to raise your alk. back up to where you want it(SLOWLY).Take a glass of R.O. water and mix 1 level teaspoon to disolve it and add in front of a powerhead right into the tank.Personaly I would only you 1 teaspoon a day to raise it slowly ,if you raise it to quickly you could cause other problems.
FWIW, baking soda (sodium bicarbonate ) is the main ingredient in most buffers anyway.IMO,its better to use than some of the commercial buffers like seachem whitch add borates and over priced.

did you test the new water before you put it in, if it didn't match you could have created a parameter swing?

Test your parameters, and adjust them to the right level using two part. Then start dosing a consistent amount of kalk each day, and adjust the amount to keep up with your needs.
 
You could switch your 2part to either
Randy's recipe 2 or the Bulk Reef Supply recipe #2.

Those 2parts help with the change in alk that occurs while using kalk.

perhaps you meant to post that recipe #2 helps to prevent an additional boost in pH, Greg?

In any event, it's a very rare case where pH is too high. Most of us should be using recipe #2.
 
Huh? Is it my eyes again or do you guys know of something I dont?

I didnt see where the Original Poster used a 2 part. I think he was asking about kalkwasser additions.

2 part would be something like B-Ionic or "Randy's Recipe" for calcium/alkalinity supplementation. Along with kalkwasser all are designed to replace calcium and alkalinity.

Liquid 2 parts are an excellent choice for independently adjusting levels of calcium or alkalinity.
