I just liked the simplicity of the old "kalkwasser" dosing system in Borneman's "Aquarium
Corals" and always wondered if it worked at all. I'm thinking down the road, trying to simplify things on a larger system.

I hear ya guy. I had the original article that alf jacob nilsen wrote and pictured in an aquarium magazine back in the early 90's in AFM,I'm pretty sure it was.I built my first reactor from this magazine article with a magnetic stirrer.It worked ok from what the standard practice was back then.

FWIW- I was around in a forum when Eric was writing that book.I remember the timeframe fairly well.I dont own his book and I never read it.But as I recall it he was using a still reservior back then.Frequent additions of sodium bicarbonate and advocate of Mrs.wages pickling lime.

I thought I had seen a version like the one you described before. The glass on top will likey keep out most air. It will dispense CaCO3; just not likely to be at a constant strength. Too little stirring may equal less than fully saturated limewater. Too much stirring may result in dosing cloudy water and undissolved calcium hydroxide and precipitants.

I think the work by Randy H Farely in testing the degradation of limewater in a still reservoir with just an unsealed lid simplified things by eliminating the need for frequent stirring and showed that it can if undisturbed hold it's strength for weeks.
