Karim's in wall 380g tank

Swapped for this tiny frag - supposed to be a Diablo Milli? I don't know enough to tell, to be honest.

So here's the diablo milli first glued. I think there were 10 polyps total... didn't think it'd make it

It grew so slowly at first because there were so few polyps... a month later

Ten months later (from first glued):

It's crazy how the corals have coloured up better despite the skimmer and other "essential" nutrient removers going offline.

That diablo millepora looks great. Can't wait to see it as a large colony.

What is the algae that is growing under the LED's? Is it the standard hair algae or a macro algae?

Are you not running a calcium reactor? Surprised that you are keeping up alk and ca with just kalk.

Anyway. Keep the thread updated - things just got plenty interesting lol.

the algae is a mix of macro and micro.. I'll do a deep dive soon

Just kalk reactor but it consumes an obscene amount of kalk. I should calculate out the volume of liquid instead of just the powder... I consume a 5gal bucket of kalk powder every 6 months.

Nice!
Your tank is like a big house with many secret hallways. It just keeps going and going.
Crazy pe. I love that millie.
And I really like the shimmying pavona.

Thanks. I didn't mean for it to sway but it does improve flow around it.

Maybe there's a flow option for swaying branching sps on plastic sticks..

Dude I love your tank! Amazing things are going so well. I love the big corals and fish. As well as the halides, what kelvin are they?
Can you test your do water and see what TDS it's at?
Also do you have issues with detritus and such getting stuck in coral formations causing dead spots? I have a lot of particulate in my system too, not as much as you though. And I get this problem randomly. Looks like your flow is strong enough where it shouldn't be to bad. My tank isa 3' cube so it's hard to create enough flow to stop it from happening even with 2 mp60 and 2 mp40.
I have also thought about bumping up my photoperiod now that I have a bigger chiller. What differences have you noticed between say an 8 hour period and a 16 hour period of lights?
Keep up the good work! Or keep up the barely existent work ;)

Thanks. I've reduced my workload to adding Kalk and making sure pumps are working.

Haven't changed RODI in a while and no water changes (!!) for a couple of months.

I've boiled down the core water chemistry drivers of success to very forceful air/water injection (skimming without skimming) & aggressive kalk maintenance.

The effect of a longer photoperiod has been more growth - but - I think it's due to the abundance of food and minerals. I don't think corals in other tanks stop growing in a longer photoperiod because it's too long, I think they run out of material before the algae that can make more efficient use of nutrients and they get choked out. In my case, I'm injecting minerals nearly continuously and injecting air too. The result is an abundance of Ca and CO3 with lots of nutrient food sources... now, the corals can hold their own in growth vs. the algae.

My herbivore menagerie also preferentially destroys algae (rabbitfish are insane) in the DT while the algae balance is restored in the secondary tank... that's where the pods breed to feed the omnivores... and the cycle continues.

I have basically stopped feeding except for pleasure. Without any (!!) export or water changes... The tank self balances.

The only reason I do a water change is to offset pollution.

Nice! I am currently making my own kalk stirrer that has a blade on the bottom that will be on a slant and hopefully turn the kalk over instead of just move through it. I have always had issues with evaporation being so high the kalk isn't fully saturated, especially with certain stirrers. I like your idea for eggcrate on a slant to move through it. How large is the cylinder?

Wow you have some amazing ideas for a very unique tank. I like the idea of having a cave under a dropoff I stead of just wasting space for "looks". Amazing stuff I will have to take some time to read through all the ideas.
