Kasey's Kube

Wow dude, those are nice coral frags you'll be gettning. I wish I had access to corals from Tyree, Palleta, Copps etc etc... :(

Hey Sahin! Yeah I feel very fortunate to have access to these corals. When I saw that Copps could offer larger cuts, I had to inquire. That has been a huge part of attraction to Maricultured pieces. But, with these pieces I get captive bred hardiness with larger sizes. It was a win-win situation; I couldn't pass that up.

Thanks Steve!

Sweet Kasey!!! Copps=da goods...
Looks like some old school stuff from back in da day...lo... No doubt they will flourish with your attention to detail and meticulous approach, remember, keep it simple...:)

Thanks, Perry! I'm super anxious to get these and place them in the tank. Keep it simple indeed! Consistent testing, ATO Kalkwasser, weekly 20% WC's, and eventual 2-part dosing, that's my KISS approach. No crazy dosing or extra additives.

A quick pic of the LED's after the upgrade. I meant to post this back when I first did it. I am swapping out the current cheapy fans for some stealths...they're a bit loud.

It reminds me of Christmas. :p

So, I use an iPad for just about everything online, and I was playing with a new app I have to make a schedule diagram for the tank. It's a little cheesy, but I like it:

Just thought I'd share a schedule I'm working with. I'm starting to perform small WC's in the sump in addition to my 20% WC's. I thought this would be a good way to help ensure that it stays clean and clear of detritus build-up. I don't want the Nitrates and/or Phosphates to creep up on me. It works out well because I'm used to making 5 gallons of saltwater for my changes, but I don't like doing such large ones on a small system all at once. My main concern is making sure the parameters are spot on so I don't disturb the tank and end up being counter-productive.

Oh and my tank disappears on Sundays, that's why it's not on the schedule. :p

Thanks Ayobreezie!

Update:
The frags have arrived! They're a little beat up from shipping, but with some TLC they should heal up well. I placed them on the rocks since they're not attached to large mounts like the Maricultured piece. Due to their high placement, I dropped the intensity of the lights quite a bit.

As an added bonus, Copps threw in a freebie! :)

Just wanted to point out that one of my plans has been to set up a sps nano for 6 months and when Copps did his biannual sell off I would order, stock and be done with the tank.

Oh well......

It is ok I will do something that you have not thought of yet.

Just for future reference yes or no on a tall tank with a cave system with sps at the top 12 inches?

Kasey - Don't want to knock the Stealths... Pretty quiet. But if noise is a real issue, check out Noctua fans. 2-3 times the price, but substantially quieter. Arguably silent.

Got a chuckle out of "big 3" in your diagram. On the dosing side of that testing, I refer to it as 2-part plus Mg. Now I'm just gonna say "dose the big 3"!

Much better. Thanks!

Mike, it's freakish how we have some of the same ideas. I've always thought that a tank with dimensions of 16" x 16" x 32"t would be great. There would be SPS on the top, and NPS corals below.

Thanks for the tip, Steve. I already bought them though. :p But, if they're not what I'm looking for then I'll definitely be looking at the Noctua's.

I don't know how I started calling them the big 3, just a nickname that stuck.

Well, I'm not sure if the Blueberry Tort frag is going to make it. :hmmm: All that I know is that if it's going to make it, I'll have to baby it big time for a long time. At this point though, I'm afraid it might be a goner. It looks like it's either bleaching badly or possibly tissue recession. What happens happens, only time will tell. Tomorrow, I'll do 2 small water changes throughout the day.

...and the Blueberry Tort is a goner. At this point, I feel like I should have known better; all the signs of death were there before I even placed it in the tank. The smell was foul, even for an Acropora. There were blotchy white spots all over the coral, just to clarify, not bite marks but patches where the tissue looked like it was starting to decay. No polyp extension, whatsoever. Finally, it kept sliming up in the tank, so much so that every time I basted it, it would cloud up the tank and smell up the whole apartment. Yeah, now that I've typed that, I feel a bit stupid trying to save it. In the end I woke up to a white, horribly smelly coral. The other corals seem fine.

Anyway, it's time to focus on the current livestock and the possibly high N & P levels in the tank from housing a decaying animal for 24 hours. At this point, I'll be making up 10g of new saltwater, matching the pH, Salinity, and Alkalinity with that of the tank's, and performing three 2 gallon water changes throughout the day. if the N & P levels are not within acceptable ranges, I'll wait a day and perform two more 2 gallon water changes. My biggest concern is the current livestock. That is why I'll be taking it slow and observing things between water changes. I'm glad I have the day off.

Pics will follow. :)

Sorry you lost your tort. Are you going to try a different piece or get a replacement?

I find it cool when someone "saves" a fish or a coral in the hobby. Usually those seem to do better in the long run and are our favorite pieces. It is like a switch turns on and the organism knows it had better live.

Your tall tank would be so cool to do. I would build the rock strucuture (DIY) to look like tree roots (where NPS would go) and the stump would be an out crop of SPS. I would then stock it with smaller fish that would hang out in and around the strucuture and would swim in out and on top.

I have a 37 fowlr up right now that is a taller tank but don't have the time to go crazy on but the squeaky wheel turns with ideas.

Good luck.

Thanks, Mike. John is sending a replacement, no questions asked. He's a great guy to buy from!

Your idea for the tall tank sounds awesome! I have another idea about a large scale all-in-one but with a sharp sleek look with no visible equipment. That idea will probably come to fruition as this tanks upgrade, years down the road. If this tank does well, I only want to upgrade from being tired of fragging the colonies. In the end, I want to have large full colonies that I can cut and give away frag packs to help others start up more reef tanks. Having a small tank forces me to do just that, if the corals flourish that is.

That is great news.

Ok if there is ever a team build competition we are entering.

Just remember there is no "I" in team but there is a "me".

:lmao: You got it, and I'll keep that in mind!

Here are the pics, the tricolor still has some damaged tips from shipping:
