My first guess would be phosphate. My second guess would be alkalinity swings and my third guess would be flow. It could also be all three or a combination thereof.

Could also be temp swings, but I would suspect alk first

I would suspect either an Alk swing, overdose of GFO, GAC or even over dosing too much on a carbon dosing system like vodka, or similar, or running Alk too high when carbon dosing.

What's your tank parameters and what's your filtration methods. How old is your tank?
