Keeping Seahorses

cside: Thanks for the info. To me, the tank needs to have colorful occupants. That's the big draw to saltwater tanks over fresh water. I haven't even thought of feeding them just yet. Trying to get everything close before diving in and stocking a tank. Want to give them the best chance to thrive and be happy.

I use Hagen 802's for water return from sump, plus an 802 with quick filter attachment in the tank, and an Aquarium Systems Mini-jet pump in the tank that stays on all the time. The 802's shut off for feeding.
All my seahorse tanks are set up this way.

How long do you leave the 802's off for feeding. Seems like I remember hearing that you only feed what they can consume in a couple of minutes. After that, it's just waste.

i recomend a ton more research right now. sea horses are VERY slow eaters. you use a feeding dish, and put the food in their. they will eat it over a few hours

All of my seahorse tanks 802's are hooked to timers and shut off for 3/4 of an hour, allowing the seahorses to feed on the food kept in the water column by the small powerhead that isn't shut down.
Any seahorses I've had take more than a few minutes to feed, but some certainly feed faster than others.
I don't use a dish because some of my horses won't eat from a dish and I prefer to feed only one way, not multiple ways.
As Dan U has mentioned, teaching them to use a feeding dish can be a negative thing sometimes because they may then feed off pieces that find their way to the bottom of the tank and sit, becoming bacteria factories.
However, the more diligent keepers with best husbandry can mitigate this possibility with more attention to the cleaning of the tank bottom.

well that's what I'm doing right now. I don't know much about them. Wife likes them. So, I'll find a way to keep them in a way they can thrive. I don't have a tank set up just yet. Getting the last few pieces to get a tank running. I don't want to be a horse killer. I want to do it right the first time.

if you keep the pumps off for hours, doesn't that affect the other inhabitants? where do you keep the feeding dish?

rayjay, what size powerheads would you recommend for a 55g tank. smaller one to keep on all of the time, larger one to cycle for feeding.

I like the idea of keeping the food suspended. what you said about training them makes sense.

Well since I use nothing but 802s and the minis, I can't tell you. They are all I've used for over seventeen years.
Maybe use an 802 and a smaller Hagen as well.
