Kent Marine RO/DI unit, I need membranes!

I need some membranes for my kent ro/di unit that I recently inherited from a fellow reefer. I would like DI more than RO as I believe I have the RO already, (looks like a tube with string wrapped around it over and over again *please confirm this is what is needed for RO or is it just floss like stuff?*)

Hi Fishfirst,

Thank you for your inquiry. The flow of water through an RO/DI is as follows: The water first goes through a sediment cartridge (this is the one that looks like string wrapped over and over). After the sediment cartridge the water will travel into the carbon block cartridge. After it exits the carbon block it will go to the RO membrane (this is the one that is on top of the unit and lays horizontally). Then you have two tubes coming out of the RO membrane, product water and waste water. The orange tube will be your waste water and the blue tube will be your product water. You should normally get a 1-3or4 ratio of product water to waste water (basically for every gallon of product water, you will get about 3-4 gallons of waste water). The product water then travels to the DI cartridge. The tube coming out of the DI cartridge will be your RO/DI purified water.

It is generally recommeded to change the sediment, carbon and DI cartridges about every 6 months (but this will depend on the quality of water going in and the amount of water used). The RO membrane normally will be changed every 1-2 years, or 2-4 years if you are using a flush valve.

For replacement cartridges, you can view all the cartridges here (http://www.marinedepot.com/aquarium_reverse-osmosis-deionization_accessories.asp?CartId=). I would recommend the 1 micron sediment, 0.5 micron carbon and the Hi-S SilicaMax DI cartridge. You will need to find out what the GPD is of your unit to get the correct RO membrane. If you do not know what the GPD is, you can also replace the flow restrictor to match the GPD of the membrane. If you do not have a flush valve and are interested in getting one, you can find them here (http://www.marinedepot.com/aquarium_reverse-osmosis-deionization_accessories.asp?#Add_On).

If you have any further questions, do not hesitate to ask.

I've got a flush valve... also the add on DI unit (makes it 4 stage so it looks like I've got everything covered as far as sediment cartridge, RO cartridge, Carbon, and DI cartridge). I'm not sure on the GPD. How would I match the flow to the GPD?

Hi Fishfirst,

The flow restrictor (it will be located inside the waste water line) will control the flow through the unit. You do not need to adjust the flow going into the unit unless your water pressure is too low. If your water pressure going into the unit is too low, then you can use a booster pump to increase the incoming pressure.

If there is anything else we can do for you do not hesitate to ask.
