Kessil Club

looking at getting my first kessils 2 160we tuna blues. im setting up 3ft long tank that will that be a mixed reef.. is this enough lighting if I supplement it with 2 t5s to eliminate shadowing? reason for doing 160s instead of 360s is my budget of 500

I run 1 360 and a two bulb HOt5 with ATI true actinic and purple plus bulbs on my 36" tank. I don't have a lot in there yet but I do have two bubble tipped anemones and one acro that are doing great.

I see a lot of posts about intensity but what color is everyone running for mixed reef tanks with low nutrients and low alk.

just wanted to check.. Is it ok to run 2 A360we's on a light timer?
Its like a on/off switch with a clock.. I used it for my t5s earlier.

Just want to make sure that if I run without a controller.. im not going to damage the lights.

It'll work just fine. :)

Anyone ever take apart their Kessil A360we? I just did. It's pretty easy and allows complete cleaning of the very large heat sink fins. I also gained access to the clear plastic window which was dirty and hazy on my one Kessil. I wouldn't recommend this to anyone unless your willing to possibly damage your light and or void your warranty.

What would you think of 6 A350 Tuna Blue's for a 300 gallon 96/24/30" tall? I am hoping 6 would give enough overlap to avoid shadowing. I had an opportunity to pick up 6 brand new for less then two 360's would have been. How high above the water should I mount them? I want to keep light from spilling into the room as much as pudsible. The tank will be a mixed reef with a large clam and BTA anemones.
anyone using 350s care to comment?

Finally installed my AP700 a few days ago. Had some trouble comprehending the app, but now I get it. Love the light. Will post continuing impressions over time I my blog on here

I love this light! Let me know how high off the water you are what intensity you plan on running. Looks like you got some sps in there

I'm running the off the shelf 'moonlight' (or whatever it's called) template peaking at 60 or 65% with moonlight turned off (some acros didn't like the moons...no PE at night). I'm running the lights about 4-5 inches above the tank, I'll have to measure for exact distance.

The stock template was too powerful.. about 50 PAR higher than the program I was running on my 360WE lights.. which peaked at 95%.

This light is extremely strong at lower percentage than the 360WE lights... without a PAR meter, I would probably have killed my corals...the optics on the AP700 are leaps and bounds more effective.. you can see that just by looking at it.

On a side note everything looks super happy now that I lowered the output.

I agree, I've never owned the older Kessils but the spread on this is killer. I'm at about 15-16" off the water and at 80% intensity. I got there slowly over 2 months or so. I don't know whether I should keep going higher or just stay where I am. (I don't have a par meter unfortunately)

Hello fellow Kessil Lovers...

Im starting a new build and just sold my old setup because of me moving to a new home..
I have used Kessils before and have loved the way they shimmer but haven't used then for a sps dominant tank before..
I currently have two kessil a160"s tuna sun that i have had on two small nano tanks and i cant seen to let them go lol..
The new tank is a Acrylic 60"x28"x24" that advanced acrylics just shipped me.. the euro bracing cutout is 50"x18"
I want to use the kessils I already have and am wondering how many 360"s would you use on a mostly sps tank with a minimalist aquascape in the center of mostly just branch rock?

After a week of playing with the Spectral Controller I got it dialed in the way I like. I think the most important thing I learned is just because there are 6 settings doesn't mean they all have to be different. I try to mimic the natural sunrise and sunset.

7am 20% color/15% intensity
9am 40% color/40% intensity
12pm 50% color/70% intensity
2pm 50% color/70% intensity
5pm 40% color/40% intensity
8pm 0% color/0% intensity

Kessil AP700

I just installed the AP700 over my 55g tank. It's a great light in a compact package and puts out some serious power and great shimmer. Also very simple to program. My only issue is with dimming. It seems that the brightness even at 5% is quite bright and I cannot really use it to ramp up/down for sunrise or sunset as I could with my Vegas or for that matter with my ATI LED Powermodule. I contacted Kessil support and they claim that's normal since this lamp is far stronger than anything else in the market. Has anyone else had the same experience? Here are 2 pictures with light at 5% and at 100%.

Color looks fantastic but the auto brightness adjustment on your camera will make brightness comparisons hard to do. I can make my moonlights look brighter than 100% on pictures with the slider on the photo adjustments

I run my photo period like this also. My coral seem to enjoy it. :D

Exactly what I was going to say. Ya beat me to it.
