Kick me, I'm a moron

Celebrating 9 sober years
You'd think after 35+ years of keeping fish I'd know better.
I failed to follow one of the most basic and important aspects of fish keeping. I didn't quarantine a new Ocellaris clown I got from a store I've never dealt with before. Looked good at the store. No signs of stress or clamped fins, or fin rot..it was a very nice looking clown. So home it came and having family in town I skipped the QT so I could see if the new guy would hang with my rbta and after a couple hours of hiding it started checking out the anemone. Woohoo..short lived. Three days later the clowns missing and so is the lavender dottyback. Next day the cherub angel is dirt napping. Next day the yellow watchman goby is history. And that leads us to whats left. Kole tang is stable with 4 spots of ich that I'm monotoring very closely, the falco hak and the six line wrasse seem to be fine, the coral and CuC are unscathed.
I'm not writting this looking for reasons why they kicked..short of an autopsy its hard to tell. Why I am writting this is to give credence to the need to quarantine even the best looking specimens you bring home. So this next two days being my week end I am putting up a 20H in my bedroom that'll be my QT from this day forward. No more additions due to impulse. On a brighter note though..I got a really nice frag of birdsnest and arco milli from the place I got the clown and will continue to trade with them in the future.
:moron: they need this smiley made!

You made a mistake people make every day. Some of us get burned and others are lucky and thus advocate the no qt line like its some sort of salt water religion.I am guessing here but if your fish died that fast i am guessing velvet although brooks with a clown is for sure a possiblilty.I treat all clowns for brooks regardless of looks.I would not be to hard on yourself though as i would guess even the most hardcore advocate of qt had to get burned once before he or she started a good qt regiment.

Just looked up Brooklynella disease and thats exactly the look my cherub had in spots the night before it kicked.

Because everything was fine up to the point of introduction of the clown..the clown dies..then I lose 1 fish a day for the next 3 days..deductive reasoning its called.

LOL..he adds a clownfish..it dies the rest of his fish get brooks and die and you call it circumstantial.

I did the same thing with a Clown and wiped out half my population of fish to Brook. I'm now a strong advocate for the QT process.

same happened to me, new store, with some sunburst anthias. wiped me out, sans a couple of fish.

expensive lessons, we all learn them.

no one in hobby leaves that guy, "well enough" alone......we keep messing with him.

GL on the recovery. might let the tank sit fallow for a month or so (good punishment for you) before you restock.

yeah no purchases in the near future. I have a new hood to build for the 90. So thats going to eat up my fish budget for a bit.

Thanks for sharing the pain with us. I've seen two local reefers have the same problem. One guy lost thousands. Was very painful for us all, he's a cool guy and we hated to see that happen to his awesome stock.

I have some wild caught sailfin mollies in treatment right now. These were given to me. Great hair algae pluckers. I like to keep them in my tank when I can b/c my father used to collect them in Florida and breed them. Sort of a tribute to pops.
