killing cyano

I posted on here about a month ago trying to figure out what was taking over my 20 long. After some pics and talking everyone came to the conclusion it was cyano. Ive tried more water flow and still no luck it just keeps comming back and wont stop growing. Would a uv sterilizer possibly help me any? Ive got a little money saved that id like to buy something nice with (29 cube or 120 gallon) but with this stuff giving me so much trouble it makes me not want to do so.

ok go to the lfs and get some red slime remover. do not use any more than the box says I had a bad outbreak in my 30 and this took care of my problem at least the visible part. you will want to do a lot of water changes, and carbon or phosban and I would recommend a decent filter provided you don't have one. the cyano is caused by bad top off water more than likely. just follow these steps and within a couple days all yor problems should be solved

Go buy Chemi-Clean.

Remove all chemical media (Carbon, Purigen, Chemi-Pure).

Dose per box instructions (Maybe use a little bit less)

For 2 days do not run the lights and have an extra airstone in the tank.

After 2 days do a large water change.

Add chemical media back.

Cyano will be gone.....

I just finished the treatment of my tank with chemclean (red slime remover). This is my third time for 3 different tanks. I used 25% more than it recommended. No fishs, coral, even sea horses lost; and they are gone !!! It worked great. After 2 days, I did 20% water changes and another 10% 1 week later.

My LFS, he put 50% more than it recommended !!!

Low PH can lead to cyano as well try using kalkawasser to keep your PH on the high side.

Antibiotic treatment works but if there's an underlying issue it will come back.

Listen to the previous advice and also disable the skimmer air intake for a couple of days if you have one, The treatment makes skimmers foam like crazy and overflow.

I have a 39G Cadlights Signature and it has a built-in UV that kills the Cyano. till now i havent had any cyano (slime algae) breakouts. they sell the UV separately but you need a filter chamber to hide the uv rays from coming out.

but UVs do work in killing and preventing slime algae and killing Cyano.

here try this....this is what someone else told me to do and it worked perfectly. All of my cyano is completely gone.

LR & a good skimmer are all you need on a reef tank for filtration.

This is what I would do (not what everyone else would do):

Next, do 25% water change with fresh RO/DI saltwater once a week for 4 weeks.

Cut the lights off for 2 days completely. You can probably get away with 3 days... but 2 is all I feel comfortable with. 48 hours total. Then bring the lights back on at only 4 hours per day for 2 weeks. Then gradually work them back to your scheduled durations.

Meanwhile... work on getting a refugium set up w/ 4-5" of LS & chaeto. An HOB refugium would work (small CPR AquaFuge2). I own this unit.

In 4-6 weeks you should be better than ever if you follow these steps.


I'm certain others will suggest some stuff. I promise my suggestions will work... but others' will too probably.
