killing mushrooms

Don't laugh about the cooking rock thing. Some people have literally boiled or baked liverock and ended up almost killing themselves.

I'm not sure if they were not understanding the "cooking" process or if it was an act of desperation.

Personally, I wish they would get away from the whole coined term of cooking rock. Pretty sure my neighbors already think I am a drug dealer with the glowing lights, scales and white powders. So now some fellow reefer comes over and starts asking me if I have my rock cooking yet? ;(

I agree.

You guys, my mom and dad had salt water about 20 years ago and she keeps telling me stories of boiling her rock and www shocked when I told her that was a no no. Apparently their whole group of friend used to boil all their rock

What level would you need to get the ammonia up to to kill everything but the bacteria, leaving zero possibility of aiptasia or other pests of surviving?

Would you need to get it up near 10ppm or just over 2ppm?

I think closer to 10 ppm would work great. The bacteria will have a feast. lol

Sorry I didn't see your post earlier.

I like the option of bringing it up to 10ppm ammonia and let it run for a week or two. This was said earlier here in this thread or a different one. Anyway it's a win/win because your bacteria will have a feast and the aiptasia are history, even the ones in the pipe/lines :D

My guess is they would survive. I put one of my totally infested rocks in a tank by itself and then put a heater on as high as it would go. It got to around 93 and wouldn't heat anymore. I left it like that for several weeks and they still did not die.

There's no reason for the bacteria to die from the ammonia spike because they feed on that; actually they will multiply. The only problem would be caused if using a dead fish. In that case you need to ensure you have good oxygenation of water for the bacteria with air stones maybe.

Ammonia is probably the worst toxin to marine life, heat not so much. If you want to kill a marine life other than bacteria overdose it with ammonia IMO

Exactly the ammonia isn't going to kill the bacteria, quite the contrary it will have a party!!!!! :hb2:

This was the point in dumping 10 ppm of ammonia to kill the mushrooms and not the bacteria, should also work on killing aiptasia. And of course any marine life you want to keep make sure you get them all out and into a different tank before you have the ammonia party!
