Kinda discouraged needing help with skimmer

Ok guys got a dilemma on my hands. Ive had my 100gallon tank setup now for around 6 months. I have two radion gen 2 xr30w mp40 powerhead and a pro aquatics rs400sump so total volume is around 130. We have a light bio load sailfin one clown coral beauty couple of softie corals ansd two cleaner shrimp...here recently our reef dynamics ins 80 skimmer went out. So i put a coralife 300 cone skimmer from my parents old setup in for the time being...i am looking to replace that skimmer this week with either a nyos 120 or a nyos 160....which out of the two skimmers would yall recommend....thanks for any advice you guys have

JMO,

Marine Depot carries Aquamaxx skimmers. I've used one on a past reef.

I firmly believe you get the most bag for your buck with Aquamaxx.

Seems to me Nyos has mixed reviews.

I run a Bubble King and it's not fair to compare any other skimmer to one.
Bubble King is simply the best skimmers in all categories... Except Price

Yeah, I've had my BK 160 for over 2.5 years.
Unless you've owned a BK you can really relate.
Talk about set a forget, BK wrote the book on that one for skimmers.

I never even seen a used one for sale.

So far, caulerpa in the fuge with all the live rock and sand is doing the job. I tend to delay water changes so I'm happy that nitrate is less than 5 and phosphate is near zero.

So your running a fuge.

I'm old school... Back in the 1980's we were just starting to drill holes at the top back sides of aquariums so water could drain drown to a lower smaller tank. You were praying while you were drilling your brand new tank! (lol). It wasn't even called a sump at that point.

The theory was back then and has kinda came back full circle now is algae can handle your filtering needs.

Well we didn't want all that green algae in our main display so we grew it in a lower tank and never turned the lights off on that lower tank, so the sump was born.

I agree with your statement. I never used a protein skimmer until about 1999.

There are several kinds of skimmers, and the more efficient ones do a dense foam, almost like meringue: these are the cone types. Skimmers oxygenate and keep the nitrate level under control. If you do not have a skimmer do look to these two problems by other means.

I have one of these.

Its cheap, easy to put together and clean, and sucks the sludge out of the tank. I have to empty my cup every three days and the skimmate is the foulest smelling sludge of crap I have ever seen.

It is worth the 10 minutes every three days.
