Kole & Desjardini?

Just Reefin'
I have a 150G with a smallish Kole right now, probably 3.5-4". I am pondering adding a Desjardini of around the same size. The Kole is aloof, very peaceful, and sticks to his daily grazing schedule.

Since one is zebrasoma and the other Ctenochaetus are there any outright concerns with these two together? Has anyone had experience with this combo?

Thanks in advance.

I have had Kole Tangs with just about any other combo you could name this side of a Gem, and had no issues except for a Sohal (which had issue with any other fish). Problem you will run into is that the Sailfins get big, FAST! 150 is really too small.

Thanks, and noted. I have a buddy with a 180 and his Salfin seems to do well, but absolutely understand.

The goal was a purple tang with our Kole, but I've just heard so many stories of them being aggressive, so worry about our docile Kole. There is a very nice purple right now I can get, healthy, looks great, but is a bit larger than our Kole. I'm thinking my best bet is to hold off and get a purple tang that is at least the same size as our Kole, or smaller? Would adding him last help to quell that initial aggression?

Gotta tell you that I have had purples a few times and haven't found them to be as a nasty as reputed. I have one in my current tank and the yellow is clearly the alpha. No Kole at the moment, but have a Chevie in QT. I think if the Kole is established, even a slightly larger purple would be OK. Their different genus, and not the same body shape, so I'd go for it. Do you use a socialization box? Worthwhile addition if you don't (I made mine though).

I have heard both.. Buddy has a purple with a hippo and the hippo does more bossing around than the purple does. I'm just a little more worried because our Kole is such a lightweight in terms of size compared to this purple.

They are getting new fish this coming week, so they are on the lookout for a smaller purple tang for me. We have ample swimming room in this tank and figure it wouldn't be a bad idea to have another tang.

Mine are best friends.

Thanks everyone.. I need to decide whether I go with a Purple Tang at this point or Desjardini...

As a general rule I should be aiming at introducing a fish or the same size (roughly) or smaller for better success?

Actually Koles are the ones that dont like other tangs... They can be ok if added last or in a large tank. They especially hate tangs of the same shape.. But people have experienced different results..

I agree on no Desjardini, they get massive. I saw one the other day that was over 9 inches long. Even if it would be ok in that size tank they get so huge they look stupid and once that size are hard to get rid of.... This is one of the tangs That require a large tank...

As far as purple they are the same shape and may be a issue... I think it might be ok in the 150 though that is a decent sized tank, but if it dont they will be heard to get out....

Its a tough call either way...

Thanks, i am going to pass on the Desjardini and focus on the Purple for the time being. He was in with a Yellow Tang at one point, but no longer is. No problems with the two, so thinking with a purple being in the same family as the yellow I would have good results.

Just wondering if I should try and find a purple of comparable or smaller size. I've also seen other people who say their Kole tangs are the very aloof and docile.
