Kole Tang/Bristletooth Tang diet

Will they eat macro algae, or just the algae that grows on the surface of the glass and rocks? I have loads of Macro that I would like mine to eat, but he hasn't touched it yet. He seems to like the glass and the rock surfaces only.

Another question I have is whether or not he will eat brine shrimp or that sushi wrap seaweed that you put in the clip for most tangs. I am worried he won't get enough food, or that I might have to get a another tang to keep the macro under control. Are they finicky? Thanks!

Kole Tang?

Kole Tang?

Hello Acromatty : I think THE YELLOW Eye Tang is the best surgeon fish out their.. I had Two of them and was looking at a nice small one at my LFS> today but came home with 2 small cleaner shrimp instead. The Koles I have raised graze all day long. Like you said they love the fresh green algea on the glass and rock surfaces but you can supplement with red green or brown brown sheets of algea with a clip or wrap it around a rock with an elastic. Mine also ate any food I gave them such as mysis, large ocean plankton, fresh ocean caugt fish. Hikara Brine . cycloeze. or new life spectrum pellets ... Happy Reefing:beer:

Wow thanks! That was thorough and helpful. I never thought of wrapping that stuff around a rock before, I'll have to try that. Mine is new, so I am hoping he will decide to eat mysis or brine eventually. Will they eat feather caulerpa? Some came in on a frag and it has been proliferating.

They will take nori and other foods eventually, but many will only eat film algae for the first month or so. I would be surprised if they ever eat macro algae. Other tangs will.

Bristletooth Tangs will eat anything- including detritus and fish poop.
Their mouth, lips and comb-like teeth are developed to flap and bang against hard substrates in order to scrape the MICROalgae off. They love "green fuzz". MACROalgae isn't a big part of their diet.
