Koralia powerheads anywhere local?

At some point the resistance in your flesh may be less than the resistance of the pathway to the ground probe.
That would NOT be a good thing.

Nope. Ain't gonna happen. SW is a pretty good conductor, and a copper/titanium grounding probe is a very good one. The tank water will be grounded with a probe installed. It won't matter where in relation to the pump, or where you put your hands in.

The best solution is a GFCI outlet and a grounding probe. That way the GFCI will trip if any current is being returned through the grounding probe. A breaker will only trip if the current leak exceeds the breaker's rating.

Also, be cautious if you put a probe in the sump and then have the pump inside the main tank. If you shut off the return pump while doing maintenance, the water-made "connection" between the tanks is broken, and the main tank is no longer grounded.

I was just making reference to the fact that you're taking a chance by putting the probe in your sump which will always create more resistance to ground from your display tank than if you put the probe directly in the display tank.

For example, here's the readings from my tank.

Tank to Tank resistance = ~230 ohms

tank_to_tank.jpg

Tank to Sump with return pump running, resistance = ~880 ohms
Almost 4 times the resistance of a probe placed directly in the tank.

And finally,
Tank to Sump 30sec. after shutting off the return pump, resistance = ~4.1 kohms (4100 ohms)
Almost 18 times the resistance of an intank connection, and as the pipes dry out that resistance is only going to increase.

Well, I guess I won't be doing any nodal analysis on the tank anymore. The first two numbers are higher than I expected. :D

Just out of curiosity, did you try to measure the resistance from the tank, through your body, to the bottom of your feet? I think we can still safely assume that the grounding probe, regardless of position, will provide a much lower resistance path to ground than human tissue.

Back to the original topic, I just picked up at Koralia 1 at Reef Life on my lunch break. Pat's running a great special on them this week. I'm planning to use it in my sw mixing container (need the MJ for something else).

LOL. I actually thought about it... I wonder what the worst case scenario would be... say, standing barefoot on tile in a puddle of SW?

That's an excellent idea.
If I hadn't already blown my wad, I'd consider getting another at his price too.

$$$???

I just put my 2 # 4's in my tank. At first I was concerned whether the acrylic was too think for it to hold tight, but I guess it's allright.

I like.

I got this off the big Koralia thread, it's about the recall... You can find the 'bob' number in the box's barcode label or in the pump label. Thankfully mine did not match!

Hello dear customers, the company Hydor informed us about a recall: Quotation/HYDOR: After careful evaluation of the life span tests, which are continual accomplished in our laboratories, to have we stated that in the above-mentioned pump models a contained a component can lead to a potential safety problem at the product. As respectable specialist dealers is incumbent on it to our obligation the appropriate information also at the customers further to give. Models and/or production plumb bob numbers concerned are: P19200 KORALIA 2 EUROPEAN UNION? PLUMB BOB NR. 644? 651? 703? 707 P19300 KORALIA 3 EUROPEAN UNION? PLUMB BOB NR. 644? 651? 703? 707 The models KORALIA 1 + KORALIA 4 are not affected by the recall, since they are differently developed. Please you examine your pumps and inform you us, should you one of the pumps mentioned of us have, so that a return motion and an exchange can be organized. Please no returns without previous arrangement with our despatch department are to take place. Thank you for your cooperation and your understanding Its AquaTerra Shop team

P19300 KORALIA 3 EUROPEAN UNION? PLUMB BOB NR. 644? 651? 703? 707

Well that's good news for us.
I don't think any of the pumps in our group buy had that model # or that bob #.

The two #3s I have here for CiroFuentes22 are model # P19301 and bob # 649.

What are the model and bob # of the other #3s in the group?

Those are the same numbers I have...

But i emailed the company and gave them all that information, and he responded with:

"Hello, Please contact me between the hours of 6:00am and 12:00pm pst. We can discuss your options for return of product."

I'll let you know what he says when I speak to him...

OK, just got off the phone with the rep. First, he confirmed that they will immediately replace the 3 with a 4 (free of charge), if that is what you want. If not, the new 3's will (hopefully) be here at the end of the month, and they will replace what we have....they will pay for shipping both ways.

With regard to the models and/or production plumb bob numbers listed above, he said that he does not think that information came from Hydor, as they are recalling ALL model 2 and 3 Koralias...regardless of those numbers.

Thanks for confirming that.
Hmmm... what sounded like a bad thing has now turned into a bonus... if I had bought the #3s I would be getting a free upgrade to the #4s and saved myself $20.

What is the return information/procedure from the rep you spoke to?

Ok. Good to know then! I had just copied the info from a post on the other Koralia thread.... I can't have 4's on my tank.... My 3's are just enough not to blow sand all over the place, so I guess i'll have to wait until the 3's come in.

Yeah, unfortunately I think that two #4's on my tank would simply be too much...so I'm gonna wait for the shipment of 3's to come in.

John, basically you give them a shipping address, and they send it to you 3-5 day shipping from the wet coast. If you go through the company you purchased them from its 3 day ground. Even though mine seem to be working fine one of those numbers match, so I will be replacing one with a 4. Im a little apprehensive as I have a 65 and like everyone I think it will be too much. I will see though when it comes......I may take out the 3 thats in there now and see what happens with just the 4.

OK, so it took about 1 1/2 weeks but Hydor promptly replaced my 3 with a 4....I am going to put it in thtank this evening and hope that it doesnt cause a sand storm. :)

So, guys, what are your thoughts after using the Koralias? I bought a #1 for my ~30g saltwater mixing container. Because it's rated at 450gph, I thought it would do a much better job than the MJ900 it was replacing (rated at just 230gph). The Koralia was completely ineffective for this task. I swear I had more water movement with the MJ. Disappointed here, I think they overstate their gph by a wide margin. Interested to hear what you guys have found.
