Well...it's about time that I actually put a tank log on this site of my 40 breeder. Part of the reason, is the jealously that I feel, seeing Mark's beautiful reef win TOTM (he's also a member of my Local reef group)!
Before I start with the important stuff (Pictures), A little bit about my hobby history.
I started with freshwater tanks as a kid, and I bred various cichlids, including some fantastic aulonacara cichlids.
My first marine tank was purchased in 1999 while I was in college. The tank was a standard 55g acrylic tank. The tank included a hood with 4 VHO bulbs fired on a Ice cap ballast. A small berlin skimmer, A 40g sump, and bioballs!
However, this tank grew corals! It had so much GSP that it literally looked like a tank full of grass. I eventually traded some of the GSP rocks to a LFS in exchange for "clean" rocks, and some tiny SPS frags I received from John Susbilla (aka "Tubs").
At this time, I also became friends with a local reefer named Kris (aka Berlinmethod.com). However, with the inevitable yearly move while in college, I sold this tank and went tankless for a few months.
I then purchased a new tank in 2000. This was a 150g Lee Mar glass aquarium 5x2x2 with 3 400W halides. I added a 40g sump, a berlin skimmer, an auto top-off system, and a moonlight. This tank was started from scratch and Stayed with me for 3 years. Unfortunately, at this time, I didnt really take many pictures of my tanks, and the few images I have are pretty barren. Ill try to locate some and post, just for kicks!
My interest in SPS blossomed at this point. I added many tiny frags, some of which I wish I had to this day. This tank housed a number of Tyree frags, many of which are still desired pieces to this day. Unfortunately, I was somewhat broke during this phase and I did not buy a controller to run the tank. for this reason, I believe, My tank crashed at least 2 times over the course of 3+ years, and I lost all of the corals in both crashes.
Finally I sold the tank and got out of the hobby for a while. At that time, I attended Law school and was probably too busy for tanks anyway!
However, in my last year of law school, A friend was moving and had two 12g nano tanks which needed homes. I happily took the tanks, since I had essentially pushed my friend into the hobby with my 150g tank, and so he knew that I would look after the tanks with pride. These were great little tanks to pass the time until I purchased my current tank.
I purchased my current 40g tank in late 2007. A local reefer posted it for sale and I was looking to get into the hobby. He had done a wonderful job with the little tank, and I was glad to not start with just a pile of sticks.
I purchased the tank, stand, 2 return pumps, test kits, food, etc. for $1300 (as I recall).
The tank included this coral... (my earliest picture of the tank that I can currently find)...but I cant find any of the early 2008 pics at this time.
