L.A. in wall 800 gallon system!

Hey Euler,

Sorry to take so long to get back to you but I have been on Vacation for the last few weeks! (I was snorkeling and diving at the Great Barrier Reef!!!)

To answer your question...I have been researching and thinking alot about the cost vs benefit of alot of different lights and I am really sad to say that LEDs do not impress me from the growth perspective of SPS and It would take a whole lot of T-5s to cover and 10ft x 3ft tank!

So I'm going with M/H lighting for now and maybe in the future when LED really prove that they can not only sustain SPS but grow them then I will be ready to move to that.

Thanks :spin2:

Your setup looks amazing I know how excited you are to finally see it coming together, I am kind if in that spot now. It's pretty cool to see it go from idea to reality.

I agree lighting seems to be the new "hot debate". I have been away from the hobby for quite some time and just restarted an old build.

MH + a chiller malfunction killed my last tank, so I was pretty excited about the LED advancements since I was last active in this hobby. It just seems the more I read the more I am not sure if they're really that far along and I am strongly considering going back to MH and T5's for this build.

Since I plan to allow the tank to mature a while after I have it setup I will tinker a bit with the LED's and see how I feel with some hands on experience.

Thanks for the inspiration and I would like it if you posted a link to your build for me to keep up with as well!

I'm excited about the new LED tech that's coming out but like you I'm not sure how mature that technology is so far (so it's still not a yes or no for now) but I know what M/H can do so unless I see otherwise in the next few months then I'm gonna keep going with the M/H idea.

I just have one question...I've seen some peoples huge tanks with very few M/H lights over head...for example; professor sanjay in CORAL magazine last month has a 500 gallon tank with only three! So how many could I place over a 10ft.x3ft. tank and expect good growth? I want to do what is right but I want my lighting bill not to skyrocket too much! :crazy1:

Thanks,
George

My Quarantine tank is coming along...here is a close up of the glass and some dead sand!

I've had to cutomize my already recently remodeled and beautiful home to place the tank in the location that I wanted so I've had to move an 8' window two feet to the side so as not to be in the way. I have also had to move my entertainment center to another side of the bonus room so I will be removing the sliding door and steps leading up to it since the entertainment center will be sitting in front of it.
You know you are a reef addict when you're willing to rearrange your whole floor plan to fit your addiction!
Thank God I own a construction company so it lessens the blow a little...gotta use my down time for something constructive ;)

My Wife is fantastic!

My Wife is fantastic!

You have a very understanding wife! Mine would kill me if I wanted to re-arrange the house for a tank.

My Wife is the best...She is the one who came up with the idea of where to place the tank in the house! :love1:

I'm very blessed to have such an understanding wife who can deal with being married to a reef junkie (and who encourages it!) :inlove:

This looks like it'll be REALLY fun...

I'm doing my build right now (should be getting my tank in about a week or two) and find it hard not to start planning for a build of this magnitude for my next upgrade when I see this thread... looks AWESOME!

The same invitation is extended to you for my build! :)

If I'm ever that far north (I'm in Mission Viejo/Orange County), I would LOVE to stop by.

Thanks,

Chad

Thanks for the invite Lawrence...count me in on your get together and I would appreciate it if you stopped by anytime to give me your two cents about the tank build...I see that you've got a similar tank.

Thanks,George

I love Change!

I love Change!

I am looking forward to tagging along on this. I love a project that starts with demolition.

I love doing construction on my house & demo is def a fun part (it's where you take something that looked fine before and destroy it!)....I always get kinda jealous when I build or remodel for my clients! I'm always coming home and telling my wife that I have this idea or that plan for our house and she's always trying to remind me that we already remodeled our place and that we can't just be under construction continually :wildone:

I'm always getting new ideas for my place...I just need to hit the lotto to afford it lol... :crazy1:

:) My house is still in the first stage, I have only lived in it for three years so I have had limited time to upgrade the way I like it. Of course buying my first and second fish tank (8 gallon upgraded to a 215 gallon) has slowed that even more :)
