L.I.R.A. Meetings at Dowling

There really is no point in anyone else posting anything. The board will do what they decide and the membership will have to live with it. If anyone isnt happy with it just dont renew your memberships. The old board wasnt totally honest with us on the reasons for the departure from the dance studio. Politics at its finest! Every politician has there own agenda and LIRA is no different.

I think we and the board forgets that it is their job to serve the membership not the other way around.

Everyone one here should take a few steps back from the situtation and take a deep breath. We must remember that this is a hobby 1st, not a job.

When ever an issue comes up, the board gets blasted if we act to quickly or it takes a little while. This isn't our main job, we have family, friends and chores just like everyone else. However, the board is also made up of people who volunteer their free time when others don't have that ability.

While it is the board's responsibility to serve the membership, the members must understand that our decisions are reflective upon what is best for the association as a whole. It does not help when members have a hidden agenda or wants what is best for themselves or a select few. The association is made up of over 140 members. What is best for the majority is at stake along with keeping true to a directors core duties.

I ask that when change does happen, lets give it a chance to work instead of hoping that it fails.

I for one would like the board members to start a thread that delineates what our options are and asks for member comment relevant to those options.

It's all right here in this thread. Currently we have Dowling that will bounce us around in favour of paying crowds (catering). The board has asked for suggestions and input as to other locations to check into. That is pretty transparent. I don't see where they've held out on us in this current situation. The Dance studio is water under the bridge, Les says it's not available, so no point arguing about it. Let's work together towards a future instead of griping about old arguments, I think we'll be more productive that way ;)

2) The second issue is whether there should be a seller's fee of some sort imposed at transactions that occur during a meeting.
Sounds like something that merits a comment period separate thread?)followed by a vote? I don't know what the by-laws say for this sort of thing, but there must be a procedure to determine procedures.

That was handled via member input on the old private forum quite some time ago. IMO that's a settled issue from perspective as long time member.

You have just described the problem with the board not the membership. Also if your position on the board is a problem i am sure you can step down. Like you said it's not a job and if your real life is getting in the way of LIRA then you would only serve yourself and us best by stepping down.

So The statment made by Les is quite bit differente from the above official position. I guess we will never realy know why we moved in the first place. Good going guys.

I will address this once again, since you have quoted my statement. All of us wish the best and continued success with Les's business and I want that to be clear.
As I stated earlier, as a new board member, I was not present during past board discussions on the topic of moving from the dance studio. I was pleased to see that Les had responded to this thread here. We can hear his side of the issue in his post. His post clearly states his position with the tables at our meetings. He states that they created a flea market type atmosphere and that he felt it did not benefit the club.
The merits of the tables is not the issue. It is however up to the membership, how we conduct our meetings, and not the ownership of the venue used to hold our meetings. Some meetings tables are widely used for auctions, sales and trades. In some other meetings they are not used. Many here are voicing opinions and have not attended meetings in months and have not paid their membership dues as well. They are voicing opinions on conjecture ,since they have not attended in several months, and are only counter productive.
The board spends a great deal of time and incurs personal expense to meet regularly to do our best to provide meeting locations, events and speakers. The L.I.R.A. has elections each year where members can run for office and step up an give their time and effort for all. This board has done just that .

well i haven't heard anyone come up with any locations near the suffolk/nassau border so im going to throw out the selden campus of suffolk communtiy college again. may be a bit far for some to drive, but im sure they'd be able to get us a room for free. its only like 15 mins further east from dowling.

A new location has been found in Commack and we are working on a schedule to get the ball rolling. Joe, will be posting a new thread with more information later today.

Finding a new location is one thing - hard work, but manageable. What happened with the dance studio in the past is another. It can't be changed or undone now, and obviously, there are still a lot of hard feelings. I still would really like to see a reconciliation between Les and the old members who were effected by the situation and the board and club members today. Les, you did state your opinion about the "flea market" type vending. But you also stated that you wanted to discuss the issue. And, in my opinion, you chose the high ground when you took the dance studio as a current option off the table. You certainly made it easier on everyone involved in finding a new location by removing this as a source of conflict in the club. I think you deserve a lot of credit and respect for that - not everyone would have handled the situation as you have.

Anyone who has attended NERAC or any recent meetings has to be able to see how hard the board members try to make this a great club. I'd like to give the board the benefit of the doubt and believe that they are trying their best. No one is perfect and some situations are just difficult. It's easy to be an armchair coach, but it's tough to be the one responsible for the decisions. Even if the original move was not handled properly in terms of giving Les the respect he deserves, I doubt that anyone was being purposely hurtful. Let's not make the same mistake today.

I'm sure that a lot of effort has gone into finding a new location. Thanks for that.

Thanks everyone for their input. As always, anyone that wishes to help, contribute, do some work, is always welcome. No one with a good idea or an hour or two to spare is ever turned away. Aside from the board members. we have many club members that volunteer time/energy/resources to help make the club run smoothly. James Chou, Dave Salav, and Vinny DiSpigno are three that come to mind immediately as people worthy of recognition for work done behind the scenes to support the club, and there are many more that volunteer. Words are cheap; acting on them is another story, and thanks to all that make that committment for the benefit of everyone.

Assistance in setting up or breaking down when we have a mtg. It is always good to leave a place clean when we are done. Registration and sign-ins (aka door monitor) is always needed.

Nice!

Pre-NERAC we can always use help getting the word out to potential vendors, potential attendees, LFS's etc. We'll start working on NERAC earlier in the year this time, so when the time comes I'm sure we'll be asking for help. Thanks!
