Lantern Basslet Conspecific Aggression?

I have read that lantern basslets are simultaneous hermaphrodites. Thus I was considering putting 2 in my 30g cube. The one currently in there is close to full grown and the boss of the tank. However, he does not harm the thread fin cardinals, other than to push them around a little.

Would it be to much to put in another?

I would think you would be fine. There will probably be some aggression, but it should subside. Also make sure there are lots of hiding spots maybe some at the top of the tank, and if you can QT the fish and make sure it is very fat before introducing it. It should be used to you and eating well.

They are simultanious hermaphrodites, but in nature (they are the most common basslet here) they space themselves out. I have never tried to keep them together, but I would think they would not get along in such a small tank. I have seen them chase each other around as soon as they were visible to each other, and in the ocean they have territories, only comming together when one or the other wants to breed. If I were to try this I would add them at the same time and make sure they are similar in size.

IwishIhadgills is right, they will eat any shrimp you try to keep with them, even cleaner shrimp, and they will eat any small fish they can fit in their mouths.

They eat shrimp yes, but not always. They are prone to eating smaller fish and inverts. I have a 3 inch LCB in my 55 gallon and has been cleaned by the 3 inch cleaner shrimp in my tank many times. However, when this fish arrived at the LFS, it was placed into a tank with cleaner shrimp and it ate every one of them. The cleaner shrimp in the tank were very small, so my general observation is that they will eat whatever they can fit into their mouth. If said prey is too large, they won't even try. I can only assume the LCB COULD eat the 3 inch cleaner if he wanted to. So far, we're all good.

I don't have any shrimp in the tank, and I don't plan on it (because of the basslet).

Since they set up distinct territories in the wild, I guess I will limit myself to one. There is nowhere near enough rock work in the tank for separate territories for that size fish.

I'm thinking about a lantern basslet, but i wanna have a Tail spot blenny and 2 clowns that ould be it in my 20 any advice?

I agree.

my lantern basslet has decided to pick on my firefish. The firefish definitely is not small enough to fit in his mouth. this surprises me as the firefish is not the smallest fish in the tank as there are a number of much smaller goby species. I can only assume it is a territory dispute.

any advise on catching the bass or the firefish? one of them has to be removed or the goby will almost definitely die.

Carefully with the lantern, mine ate a small clown. One big gulp... Anyway, trying to catch him. PITA.

it really is too bad. The Lantern has so much personality. Very active and aside from when the Lawnmower Blenny started roughing him up a bit, it is otherwise a very peaceful fish.
