Large angels in a reef

Here he is on a swim. He grunts at the majestic, But the majsetic is more nimble and can easily get to where the emp cant because he's too big.

I have a Navarchus and a Blue-Face, they have eaten everything in my 110 reef except some anemones. I am swapping them out for a goldflake and I am hopping to start restocking my reef. Does anyone have any experience with these angels in a reef? Are they comparable to the blue-face or imperator angels?

hey, i have a 300g and i am really considering getting a emperor angel. i have read up on them, but what is the general rule for these guys in reef- mostly eat zoas, some lps, and leave sps alone or am i wrong

creetin - How long have you had him?? Beauty!! Im looking at one for my 180 (juvi) and would like some feedback. How long have you had it? What types of corals do you have(i see zoo's) Has he bothered any of them? what type of feeding scedule, what type of food? Any and all info would be great!!

pcbaseball It has been my experience that that is a good starting point in the Are Angels reef safe discussion. Beyond that every fish is an individual and you may or may not get one that leaves your sps alone.

I also think that a lot of room and a good amount of feed helps them in leaving your corals alone.

I think the best situation is to decide before you try what is more important to you the fish or the corals and have a back up plan in place if it doesn't work for you.

I have had him almost 6 weeks, and he has nipped at some blue zoa's, But that stopped. Could have been some die off and he finished the removal process. I have seen my hippo do that to dieing zoa's.
I have mostly sps, some lps encinos, plate coral, acans, and zoa's.
I feed 3 light meals a day plus keep tang heaven in there to munch on. He does eat it. He eats pelletts, mysis, frozen angelfood, chopped clams, krill and squid all soaked in garlic, selcon, and zoe. The emp will eat till he pops, and the majestic is getting there.
Emps are notorious for being aggressive with other angels/fish so remember that he could very well be the only latge fish in there.
Get one eating prepaired foods first in a fuge/sump. Too much to tase for a newly adapted fish in an aquarium.

that is excatly what i plan to do

Thanks Cretin! I plan on getting it soon. I figured a juvi would be easier to train. Its a 180 with Sailfing, Kole, Cardinal, clown and a few green chromis, he'll have plenty of room. Im just worried about my brains, i have 5 - 3 closed, one is about to split, moon, favite. 9 plates(babies), 10 leathers, tons of zoa, shrooms, pnk birdsnest, orange cap, 10-12" bubble, and a few other things. I have a 20gl set up for him to get him hooked to prepared & homemade before he becomes a perm. resident. The only thing is, I can only feed at night....

Yeah a young one would be better to try to adjust it with other fish.
This one has already taken the tough guy roll. He's pretty bossy in the tank. Nothing harsh, But he keeps every fish on their toes.

Not sure if this qualifies as a large angel, but I've got a 2" flagfin who doesn't touch corals, at least so far. The tank is slowly being converted to a reef, to date I've added Xenia, a candycane, a branching hammer, finger leather and a few zoas here and there. He doesn't even look at them. The halfblack dwarf angel, OTOH, sampled the candycane initially (just little tastes, no actual damage) but is now leaving it alone.

3 dwarf angels R.I.P.

3 dwarf angels R.I.P.

hi again,

my previous post concerned the demise of my 3 dwarf angels, and how I thought perhaps the Annularis took them out almost overnight. The other day, I bought a Queen and a new coral beauty to add to the Annularis. The coral beauties doing fine so far, if not eating in my presence yet. So, it seems that my rock collapse was the culprate. It was a relatively small collapse, but it happened right where they were hanging out. $100 smackers down the tubes plus a pretty slow and painful death for the lil guys. I have some sps, leathers, zoos, and starpolyps in my tank.I'll let you guys and gals know how things turn out with the new angels.

update.

The emperor has grown and nolonger pics at sps. It enjoys the food mix over corals. I feed very heavily so he gets his fill.

Julio,
I mixed a small blueface with the emperor, but the slightly larger established emperor harrased the blueface and he hid in a fabulous spot but he never came out and I fear he starved to death.

you got a pic of that angel >
Mine? Sure! I haven't revisited this thread in a while, I should update. Since I posted, the flagfin has taken a liking to Xenia. I actually moved most of the corals out of the tank and into another - nothing to do with the angel though - but left what Xenia was attached to the rockwork along with some GSP. Most of the Xenia stalks are regularly trimmed, but they still grow and pulse; it's like he knows he has a sustainable food source as long as he doesn't eat all of it ;)

Here's my little cutie:

I had a 7" adult Blueface and a 6" adult Asfur when I began my conversion from FOWL to a reef.

The Blueface decided he loves polyps of any kind. So back to the LFS he went.

The Asfur has been a model citizen ... paying no attention to either LPS or SPS corals.

i Have a regal in a all out SPS tank w/ clams only a week now but hasnt touched a thing. Its eating off my rocks all day. He was eating mysis lieka pig in the store and now he barely touches it any other foods you guys recommend ?
