Largest Acans ever to enter the trade?

Wow, at 16" across, you'd still need to move some stuff to get it into a 300g tank. And 1,500 polyps. Interesting.

THAT THING JUST LOOKS WRONG... NOW WERE NOT JUST TAKING FRAGS OF THEM, WHERE TAKING WHOLE COLONIES OF THAT SIZE.. THE FIRST BID ON ONE OF THEM IS 2500?? FOR AN OVERSIZED ACAN THAT WOULD NEED A SPECIAL TANK SO ALL PART OF THE CORAL CAN HAVE LIGHT.. NO THANKS

Red, please turn the caps off. Many of the acans harvested are done so as colonies and then fragged up to sell.

i love the look of the small round 7-14 polyp acan colonies. that thing is just plain huge and ugly IMO.

or... buy it. dremel off about 20 polyps for youself... and get
LFS credit by trading it in. THEY give like 1/2 retail, and if u go in increments of 100 polyps per se, THATS SOME SERIOUS CREDIT.

I must say, ugly or beautiful, the person that had that colony originally and grew it out treated it very well. It is a super healthy acan.

Why do you think it is ugly? I think it is cool looking -- I hope someone with a huge tank buys them and keeps them whole .... I would.

Thats pretty cool looking to say the least...IDK why you guys saying its ugly, it nicer than some of the smaller colonies i have seen.

On the note of harvesting I understand this was taken out of the wild 10+ years ago and grown up in someones tank over in AU. In speaking to the seller, that is what he said at least. as the story goes they guy who owned these was going to give them to the Sidny Aquarium, but have a friend who is a collector for a wholesaler who convinced him otherwise. To get the money from selling these guys.
Don't know if it is true, but I have no reason to believe otherwise.
I would love to see an aquarium get these so they stay massive

I don't think they are ugly at all, quite the opposite ;)...I was just commenting on the wonderful health and reef keeping skills of the original owner.

I just think most acans are ugly and over rated. Just my opinion of them. I never understood the fad

To an extent, i agree with you, i think there are alot of other corals that are much cooler looking than acans. Some have really cool colors but nice ones are pricey and IMO, they are all overrated.

I would want proof... I have my own feeling that anyone who was reputable, and could grow a coral that large (captively) would have the necessary friends/connections to deal with it not on ebay...
I have my personally suspicion that it was poached from a reef. no proof, just a gut feeling.

That acan is 16" across only if their eggcrate has 60% larger squares that the stuff I get at Home Depot. Still a 10" diameter colony of Aussie Lords is massive.

Probably doesn't know the difference and actually measured the circumfrence. Either that or he figured that the bigger number sounded better, and he'd just blame our wonderful public education system if he got called out on it. :D
