Larvatus off DD - anybody here get it?

When you say that "he wasn't at the point mine appears to be at" do you mean yours was just thin?

I need to find a food that I can dose multiple times a day. Im looking at the ocean nutrition products.

Wow, amazing to think that you were able to get it to eat after 2-3 weeks.

I'm pretty excited about this fishes current condition, hopefully I can get it eating the LRS foods well and introduce it into my DT this spring.

OK, for anybody interested, I have a video, but Java isn't updated on my work computer and youtube has a real problem with that. I may be able to get it done on my wife's mac, but it won't be until later.

Sorry. Fish is still doing quite well though.

Is your semi in with the general population? If he is, can you get him out? What's your current stock list again?

Yeah, lives in the display tank with the rest of the crew:

Rainfordi
Flavirostris
Octo fascists
Pyramids
Venustus
Eibli
Talbots
Starcki
Achilles
Dog face

Probably something I'm forgetting too.

Not witnessing any aggression at the moment either .

Things are going well here, the fish even appears to be going after bigger food particles and ingesting them, as opposed to just hammering the little microscopic pieces.

I think i'm going to do a big water change tonight and start my quarantine protocol, Cupramine first...

I'm a bit nervous with these two, a multibar and eating corallivore...I'll be happy when it's done and they are in the DT.

If I can figure out how to convert my video files to something youtube likes i'll be sure to post a video later, i've got a couple from this weekend.

Is it at all possible to qt separately? It's more work, but might be worth it or maybe it would be good to toughen him up a bit (having a tankmate?) haha - this is why I fail- my indecisiveness is a killer for me ... Best of luck Matt & looking forward to some updates:)

The larvatus is in a 55 by itself and it will remain that way through the quarantine period. The multifasciatus is in the same system, just in the sump, so effectively they are seperate, but together...

Hmm.........not seeing a lot of actual eating...........some sampling.

I think you said he's eating the small pieces? That's not enough...............he needs to be attacking those big chunks and ripping them into mouthful sizes.

That backwards shimmying is a sign the texture isn't quite right......he wants to eat it but it's not to his liking.

I'd look for more ways to introduce the food.............maybe some kind of feeding pole it can peck on with holes drilled in it. I believe the guy that had the Lavartus a few years ago had concocted some sort of feeding mechanism. Try to do a search and dig it up if you can.

I know what your talking about, it was a specialized box it could go into to eat.

The video may not be the best example of it's feeding habits, it was taken a few days ago and it is definitely progressing as time goes on. I'll take another one tonight, now that i'm over the hurdle of figuring out how to take and post videos.

Ed is right, he's got a long way to go before he can compete in the DT, but I'm happy with the progression in seeing.

I did see a bit of actual swallowing going on there, with quite minimal backwards shimmying, to be honest. Mine shimmied much, much more when I had it.. of course, still a long way to go though.

What food was that? Have you tried finely shaved/minced clams yet?

Don't get me wrong, it's a first step & there are some good signs.

I'm not being critical as much as just pointing out some observations and concerns.

The coralivores that were eating clams from that Asian guy were attacking those clams and ripping them to shreds to get mouth size pieces.
I'm pretty sure a Lavartus was one of the fish he had kept for 3-4 years.

It was a reef builder linked story.

I remember doing some research on those species of clams & they could only be bought bulk from some Asian country and were only sold by the pallet at a crazy cost.

You might try to find as many different clam/mussel species as possible for him to try. Maybe at a whole foods store or fish market.

I don't think anyone thought you were being critical, Ed :)

Even my regular Albertsons carries, littleneck, venus, and cherrystone clams, so hopefully you'll have some to choose from.

That was reef frenzy. Not tried the clams.

I guess I figured if it's eating this food, why change. I've has instances where I offered a clam after I got a fish eating a prepared food, and it wouldn't go back to the prepared food for a while. Don't want that happening here.

Don't worry, I didn't find you critical, I know you've got the best interest of the fish in mind.
