Yes, unfortunately, they will remain misbarred. I talked to the president of Sustainable Aquatics and he said while they will remain misbarred, their offspring should be ok.

From what I was told, the reason that the batch was misbarred was due to some sort of imperfect water quality conditions when the fry were growing out. Thus, if water quality is optimal, the offspring of the misbars should be fine.

Yes... this is common in grow out tanks. The breeder has to feed them so much that the water quality tends to suffer.

While it seems that genetics does play a part in how succeptable they are to misbarring, the root cause is water quality. Think picasso clowns... though hormones may be involved too.

If you want to dig up the info yourself, feel free. I don't really care that much... yet. As for Drs in biology being the only reliable source of information, I'd point out that some of the best books written on the topic are not written by PhDs and that PhDs are often funded by companies who may favor a particular outcome.

I didn't mean my previous post to sound like I was some sort of authority, I thought it was common knowledge. My personal view being that it does stand to reason that you don't really see it much in nature and where there is more misbarring, it seems to correlate with rivers and coastlines that are heavily populated by humans.

The only other factor that makes sense is nutritional deficiency but by that logic, misbarring in nature would be seen in areas with very poor nutrient levels that were only capable of supporting a limited number of food sources. As we all know, plankton is densest in areas with high nitrogen content.

In a grow out tank you have the same food source day in and day out and you have high nutrient levels. So pick one.

DD does have one larger Latz.Mabey get that one and another male later on.They have smaller ones come in from time to time.

yeah i'd rather add the pair of misbars just because there tank bred. if i sell my chiller sometime soon i will get them. thanks guys.

10-4 Walt - I just have a vested interest in this topic with the events that have unfolded with my latz. Simply looking for as much information and research on the topic, regardless of the author, as possible. In my case, with other species, the misbarring is present (around day 12-18) before the transfer to growout where I do indeed stuff their bellies.

Never have a problem with putting latz at normal reef temperature (especially DD's quarantined ones). Same speak for Mcc's
