My LFS has just confirmed theyre getting 8 latz clowns coming from aus... I dont know if they were caught in the wild or captive bred, I didnt ask... would they do ok in my reef at 78 degrees F? or is that too high for them.. ?

thanks

I have a pair of Latz and really like them. Although I have only had them a few months, the water is around 78 deg and they are doing well.
You will enjoy their personalities!
Ohhh... keep in mind they are jumpers! My female, when spooked at night, will try her best to jump out.

really? Ive never known clowns to be jumpers! apparently theyre getting them in quite small which is cool

There's a breeder in Australia, I think. They don't ship well and as Doni and I can tell you prone to infection/desease. I lost the first pair I had to brook. I have another pair now, had them for a couple months, and they are doing very well.

i had some occelaris clowns that were jumpers aswell. they would sleep at the very top of the tank like they were coming out of the water almost and if they were spooked they would try to jump outa the tank.

As far as I know the only one breeding latz is Ryan (same guy who bred the mcc's.) There may be others, but I haven't heard.

Yes, cover the tank. Many clowns will jump.

I'd have to search to find it, western coast of Australia, could be history now???
Here's my pair

nice pics...

i imagine theyre wild caught then.... im surprised theres no-one else breeding them, are they really hard to breed?

Hopefully it's just coincidence, but a friend of mine was just told today by a wholesaler that they had latz. He asked me to confirm from pics he was sent, and they are not latz. If your LFS is importing them direct from AU then I'm sure you'll get latz.

FYI, there is a breeding pair in the UK as well.

the guy got latz before, and I saw them when he did but he had already got a buyer for them, he just had a pair that time and they were pretty large... this time he says theyre going to be smaller and there are a couple of chaoti wrasse coming as well at the same time.. hes actually a real clown fanatic, and seems to go nuts stocking clowns and anemones... he has this cool tank with carpets and baby onyx percs in.. my kids love seeing it, blue, purple, green, red he has some 'mini' carpets about 7" in there as well in some unusual colors... the funny thing is he gets all these carpets in and clowns and I swear he never intends to sell them, justlikes to have them in the shop haha

I keep mine at 76-77 degrees. If your lfs can get them, then jump on them right away. Good luck. And keep us posted with a pic when you get them.

Thats strange that they are getting them in this time of year.I say this because these clowns are only avaible in the spring and summer months. Why?Because these fish are in protected waters and when the water warms up they tend to swin out of the waters that are protected and then we are alowed to colloect them. But I guess it is spring in Australia and what not...lol.

Those carpets are nice.

Mine are kept in temps that range between 74 and 77 degrees. I do not think that you will have any problems at 78. Your biggest challenge/worry will simply be getting healthy livestock. If you are fortunate enough to get past that hurdle you will truly enjoy them. Here a picture of my pair

Good Luck

Remember these will be expensive fish so chances are you'll have some time to observe their health in the LFS before they get snapped up.

Choose Wisely

great pic...they look awesome

thanks for the tips as well

what anemones do they usually pair with in the wild?

the nice thing about the store is that they keep livestock two weeks unless special ordered.. the guy has said he will keep them for two weeks before i take them to make sure... there are a couple of lfs locally that i actually think them keeping fish for two weeks would increase their chances of getting a disease <grin>

the guys pretty decent hes pretty upfront if stuff isnt eating or has potential problems...i used to buy from all different stores... but after a couple of big losses to disease have got far more picky who i buy from... i guess the fish tend to come from the same places but diet and crowding etc have an effect... in one lfs i watched the owner feed all the fish freshwater feeder fish...the angels and everything were eating them... they looked starved...i found out from a former employee there they dont feed their fish...but the owner will occasionally just feed freshwater feeder fish

I would grab latz straight from the shipping box, bypassing dealers' tanks. You can QT them at the right temp, treat at the first signs of illness, and avoid exposing them to problems in a dealer's tank.
