leaf fish tank

I bought a dozen Tuesday night, last night I pulled most of them out dead again. I don't get it either. I got the fresh as the lfs was out and restocked Tuesday, but I just don't seem to be able to keep them long.

I keep them in freshwater and feed them marine flakes. I've kept them for 15 years now, because my first fish were seahorses and they were wild caught. You can convert, but it has a pretty high mortality rate with a lot of batches. I think it depends on the amount of abuse they receive before they get to you.

But I was super lucky, and for the first 10 years, I collected my own marine variety every week. I kept them in a 20 gallon tank with corner airline filters (carbon and filter floss) and a bag of rocks for biofiltration.

If you're getting them from the same source, it could be your source. They are actually pretty hardy.... to a certain point.

They really like oxygen. They can live very well in low oxygen conditions as they sometimes hang up in estuaries (and is why they can "pop" so well), but in tanks, they do much much better with lots of oxygen flow.

Question, how many leafs can actually fit and thrive in the 29? 2, 3, or possibly 4? Lfs got two more in today, but they are both yellow again. Either a trio of yellow and a hopeful red or pair of yellows and a red.

A bubble wand and filter are fairly easy to come by. Anything else that helps them long term?

You could easily keep a trio or quartet in a 29 with thoughtful aquascaping (lots of open substrate but still plenty of LR and caves/overhangs).

I think I'm going for the trio. I picked up a second yellow yesterday and now I'll wait for a red one. Second is in QT and I'll see tonight of it eats.

I placed the second in the tank today after making sure it was eating well. Seems to be liking its new neighbor.

I let mine go for about two days before first feeding, then they should be good and hungry. Was it eating at the lfs?

I get the shrimp in the net and place it close to the leaf, then hurdles the ghosties towards it if they run away. After a few times the fish learns that the net means food and will start coming towards it,, then eventually climbing in after it. My new one hasn't came quite that far yet, but it stating to recognize the net as a source. If you want to net feed don't let the thistles free swim in there for the fish to pick off at their leisure as this works against you in the long run.

The guy said they have had him for almost a month so I have to imagine so. I'm thinking I might try feeder fish instead of shrimp if he doesn't take any tonite.

I would give it atleast till tomorrow. Try feeding about a hour before you have to leave for the lfs and see if it eats.

Not that I have seen. He was moving around in the tank yesterday, so I'm thinking he was exploring/looking for food. I'm going to bring home more feeders tonight to try again.

Yay, he ate the fish. Since I wasn't sure if he would eat them, I only brought home 3 feeder fish and 4 grass shrimp. He ate the fish out of the net, but still ignores the shrimp.

Since you've found what the fish is used to eating, that will help you a little down the road with weaning it.

Do the ol' "guppy on a stick" or "guppy in the net" thing for awhile, then try using the tail-end of a small silverside instead (like the pic in the feeding article).

Congrats on getting it to eat.

Mine ate dead ghosties, not the bright pink ones though, last night but refused small silversides. Keep trying

I noticed tonight that one of the leafs shed its cuticle. Then I noticed that one of them is showing a bunch of red. Is it possible thatit is just changing a little? Or is this from shedding? Or could it be a disease of some sort?
