This might get a little long but I thought I would make this thread to hopefully prevent something similar happening to someone else!!

I recently moved into a new house which had several rooms that needed to be painted. I have my spare bedroom in my house as the "fish room" where I (had) 13 clownfish, being that I just recently got into clownfish breeding. I had already painted 4 out of the 5 rooms in my house which every time I used the same procedures in isolating the room: closing both doors, turning off the air/heat in the house, draping a large towel over the tanks, and putting a towel under the small gap underneat the doors to help deal the room even better. Hang in there... This is where it gets crazy

The only change I made painting my last room (kitchen) and closest to the fish room was using shellac primer... For those that don't know very strong smelling fumes much more potent over reg primer. I finished painting the kitchen to the point where I thought it was dry... Being that it was 76 degrees that day and my house sits in direct sunlight the house started to get uncomfortable and I turned the air back on at about 4:30 pm. A few hours later I fed the fish and topped off water before lights went out and all seemed fine.

The nightmare starts... After waking up at 6:30 am going in to feed the fish all tanks were cloudy to the point of barely being able to see inside. Immediately noticing a dead fish I immediately ran out and got 5 gallons of freshly mixed salt water and begant to try and discover if any were still alive. 6 fish were still alive but barely! I scooped them all into a net and threw them in the bucket without any acclimation as I thought it was better than the horrible water they were currently in... Many many water changes later, several 10 gallon holding tanks, and a large container of carbon later I was only able to save 4 fish total.

I think what made things even worse was my protein skimmer drawing in air with "fumes" in it and mixing it into the water. All In all it was a rough and horribly depressing day. So what is my point?? When painting, spraying, bombing, cleaning or doing anything with a chemical in which you can smell take the extra time to properly protect your tank and if possible turn off filtration!

Please learn from me... THE END.

I know

I know

I always get pnto my wife when she sprays any household aerosals....my equipment is in the garage and if Im doing any work out there I always open the side and garage door..:o...sorry to hear but now you know....:reading:

Thanks guys, it definitely sucked but I can guarantee it won't happen again. Anthony you will have a text here shortly... I didn't have room for one of your clowns before but I do now. For the guys that have a bunch of $ in their tanks... Better safe then sorry just go overboard if cleaning or painting inside... Pass the word on to the wife's as well!

A similar event happened to me. I had a flea outbreak, I did everything to cover the tanks up before I bombed but forgot and left skimmer on. I lost almost all the livestock in my tank. The worst was watching my lion fish slowly die. He became blind and then couldn't eat since he couldn't catch food anymore. I didn't even think to turn the skimmer off, which is crazy cause the skimmer would do more damage than anything ...

I saw a YouTube video where Mike Paletta talks about the same exact situation he had while painting after a water spill damaged the floor and walls downstairs. Double whammy. And you know that guy had a ton of $ in livestock. I believe he lost his last colony of Paletta pink tip in the disaster. Pretty bad when M.Palleta had to get on the forums to buy a coral he cultured himself because of paint fumes..

This makes me think, my holding tanks in the garage, I smoke around it all the time with garage door closed and all and I have skimmer running as well sucking in the air (which has cigarette smoke)...... so are my fishes used to nicotine by now? *yikes*

Jthao, have you noticed early wrinkling of your fishes scales?

Seriously though, getting ready to paint the wall next to my tank. Planned on using a low VOC paint, opening the windows and turning the whole house fan on. What are the chances it will end in disaster? I guess this thread has gotten me a little paranoid.

Ya I usually think things through almost obsessively but my skimmer sucking in paint fumes completely escaped my mind. I guess I was more focused and more worried about fumes getting into the water through the top. Hearing others peoples horror stories makes me feel a little less dumb. All in all I estimated over 3k worth of fish gone in a matter of a few hours... Even worse than the money is not being able to replace the exact fish ever again. But it's tax time... Time to start things over again :)
