LED Module Comparison - ReefBrite / Illumilux / TrueLumen Pro

I have never seen corals flouresce so bright before I added the Illumilux. The tail of my Flame Angel is now a glowing neon blue. The shimmer effect is very nice.

My initial impression is that this is a precision engineered product.. the housing is optimized purely as a heat sink. But I had to be creative to figure out how to mount it, that's the only drawback.

Does anyone know if there is a spectrum chart of the specific LED used in the Illumilux blu? It brings out the finer colors that I haven't seen before in the corals.

the blue uses 3w cree blue and royal blue LEDs. I havent done it yet but I am sure if you google it you can find a graph for those two individual leds. you would have to overlap them to get the graph of the fixture.

Good luck.

Illimilux vs XHO for large tank

Illimilux vs XHO for large tank

Jeremy - I have a 78x36x28tall - sps dominated

Want to get supplemental lighting to 3x250w DE 14k Phoenix MH's to achieve a 20k effect for the whole tank. Will invest in LED lighting (to replace MH's)maybe a yr from now.

Will 2x 48in Illumilux be better than 2x 72in (or 60in) XHO's?

Earlier post from you says that XHO's produce 60% more PAR than regular RB's (so that is actually more than the vertex - for same size fixture).

Also are you aware if Illumilux does 60-72in - and how much, and if 72in XHO's are available and how long/how much.

Thanks

For your size tank the 2 x 72 XHO or 2 x 60 XHO would be your best bet for coverage. The XHO's are also going to be a bit more light output if you were comparing equivelant lengths as well. Illumilux only goes up to 48" right now.

Thanks,
Jeremy

Jeremy - thanks for your response - did you mean 2x72RB or 2x60 XHO for my 78 length. would 2x72 XHO be overkill (light up the sides too much...I dont mind getting the 72's as I'm only doing this once - however if it looks bad on the sides I'll go 60's)
thanks

Sorry if I missed something, but are the Reef Brites not dimmable??? I'm considering using a 50/50, white, and blue for a 4x2x2 mixed reef.

@MItra, the 72" or 60" would be fine, in either Tech or XHO. I think the 72" XHO would be optimaly in my opinion, since it's an sps setup.

@TomBonaire, currently they are not dimmable. However, you have two options. You can either find your own power supplies that have 0-10vdc input, or you can wait for ReefBrite to come with theirs, which will hopefully be in the very near future.

Forgot to also ask about how these LEDs should be mounted.

My T5's are about 13" off the top of the tank. Could the LED's be the same height or do they need to be placed much closer or on top of the the 40 gal breeder.

Hey Jeremey great, great thread!

I have a JBJ 24 gallon that I am looking to add some led light to for night time. I am running the stock compact lighting in it for about 9 hours a day. I am kinda looking more for moonlighting, the stock moonlights suck plus they dont work with a timer.

Any suggestions.....thanks!

@MrNeon, what types of corals? If all sps I'd suggest using 3 modules. If a mixed reef I would do 2 strips.

@JC, take a look at the Ecoxotic 403nm Stunner if you're just wanting a moonlight for that tank. The fluorescence you get with that light is unreal!

Thanks, but I think I am going to wait and see.. Biggest factor right now is cost compared to the T5's I am running. Most systems I looked at are going set me back $700 to $800 ready to go and the break even point is about 5 years compared to T5's for a 40 breeder. If I DIY LED's that is not so bad but then I lose some features I think.

A good compromise maybe to incorporate LED's into my canopy with T5's. I would like to do maybe a DIY combo of one strips white and one strip blue and white mix while running ATI Blues..i have a 36" canopy so it should be a easy swap...

I have mostly softies, shrooms, fish, but would like to get other varieties.

I have a 24'' X 20 X 20'' tank I have mostly softies but I would like to keep more SPS and chalices what would be a good LED setup for this type of tank. Thanks in advance

@moondoggy, takej a look at a couple of ReefBrite XHO's, or 3 Tech RB's. You could also do 2 or 3 Illumilux. One last option is the new Ecoxotic Panorama Pro since you have so many color options with them.

jeremy i'm wanting to ditch my vho's for some new LED actinic strips and was wondering which is the best of these three? which would you guys choose for a 48" length tank x 18" front to back and about 24" deep ( have a deep sand bed)
Also should i get 2 36" strips? or would 1 36" strip be enough" because i only need actinics.. not ready to get rid of my hqi's just yet,
the hqi's fixtures are mounted centered in each section above the left and right water portion about 3" from the center brace on my oceanice reefready tank. the center brace is probably 15" wide..
