LED Module Comparison - ReefBrite / Illumilux / TrueLumen Pro

Running the PC's will drown out the LED's slightly, but it's not going to make a huge difference for you. You will still get the shimmer effect, just not quite as much.

Jeremey --

I am setting up a 60 x 30 x 24 mixed reef. The tank will be built into an entertainment center. I am trying to sort through the myriad of LED options available. The LED segment seems to change daily with all the new innovations/options. I was seriously considering the Vertex Illumina 260, but instead of investing several thousand dollars in a finished fixture which will be hidden in the entertainment center, I am now considering a modular LED set up that I can mount inside the entertainment center. Can you tell me what combination/length of Illumilux fixtures/accessories you would recommend for full tank coverage and 12K-14K color using a Profilux controller. Thanks.

Who have you talked to at Proline? I have all of their tech sheets, etc., and am very familiar with the product, as they are as well. However, if you want specifics I would suggest sending an email direct to Vertex on it. They will have their dimming module available in just a week or two for the Illumilux, so it might be worth it to just wait on that.

Twelve weeks later are you selling the dimming module? Starting to see why I'm pushing a bit and trying not to wait for Vertex. I really need to get in dim-able LED strips, have one from Vertex and need to order more, but it is looking as if I need to look somewhere besides Vertex.

Are any of the other strips you sell reef compatible and dimable? I'm not interested in full fixtures at this point, just supplemental strips.

20L tank 30x12x12 keeping nothing at all for now but a mushroom or two and some other easy low light corals. I was thinking 1 truelumen pro marine fusion 24" for now and if the demand was there later adding up to 2 more. Would the one light it enough for the time being.

Dimming modules have landed in North America, but I have not received any yet.

I'd suggest using a single Reef Brite or Illumilux over the True Lumen Pro, you'll be much happier with the light output.

Jeremy,

I am having a tank made that will be 60x26x25. My plan is to use (2) lumenbright mini wide reflectors and place them about 16 inches from the top of the water to the bottom of the reflector.
I plan to use (2) XM 250 watt 10K bulbs with a galaxy ballast. I am thinking about getting (2) reef brites XHO 48 inch size. One would be all blue and one would be 50/50. I would place the reef brites so that they would be even with bottom of the reflector. That way no light from the halide would be blocked by the LED strip.

How does this set up sound to you?

Thanks

Jeremy, I am getting ready to set up a couple of frag tanks and I was curious if the lighting combos below would work for them. I thought the Vertex would be best because of the spread they have for these are wide shallow tanks.

Tank: 36"X18"X16
Lights: Two Marino Blanco 36"

Tank: 48X24X12
Lights: Two Marino Blanco 48"

Tank: 48X24X16
Lights: Two Marino Blanco 78"

Are you just posting to get people to find out about your business or do you really think a blue bulb and a white bulb is a great idea on top of a marine aquarium? Perhaps maybe even a brilliant idea you can tweet about?

I'm not looking for a color mix I'm wondering about growth and health from bulbs that have been proven to grow corals. I'm just not sure if this would be enough bulbs over a tank of that particular size.

Sounds like a great setup, and I really like the fact that you're using 10k XM's. The only thing I would personally do differently is to use both of the RB's as all blue, instead of one blue and one 50/50. That's more personal preference though. Good luck with it, I think you'll realy like that setup!

On the 18" wide the 2 x modules are just fine for you. On the 24" wide you could try two, but depending upon the types of frags, placement, etc., you might want to go with 3. HTH!

is anyone using just the Illumilux? I am switching from my t5's shortly and am wondering if a single unit has the output for zoa's. tanks only 16" deep but 18" wide

I used one as a single for a very brief time. I think you'll probably want to go with two modules in my opinion, 1 x Blue, and 1 x 50/50.

Illumilux

Illumilux

My tank is a 37 gallon marine LWH 30X12x22 with fish, inverts, live rock, zoas and mushrooms. I want to add one 24" illumilux marino bianco. Do you think this will be enough light and does the fixture have the necessary parts to be modified for future dimming ability? I would also like to add a clam and other soft corals once the light is installed.

ReefBrites or Illumilux for 29g Biocube

ReefBrites or Illumilux for 29g Biocube

First thanks to Jeremy, Mojo and all others providing great info and suggestions.

Along those lines, I am looking to refit my 29g Biocube by removing the standard PCs and replacing with LEDs. Note that aside from wanting to get more shimmer and growth out of corals, heat is a great concern - I live in South FL and water at times above 81 runing the stock PCs. Also consider that I currently have a reef tank with a few fish, crocea, soft corals and LPS, but eventually I may also wish to add some SPS. After reading up on this site and others, I am leaning towards either ReefBrites XHO or the Ilumilux. Questions:

1. Which would you recommend given that only 2 strips will fit (unless I remove the moonlights, which then 3 would fit) - also considering that ReefBrite has a 15" strip that would give a bit more coverage than the 12" strip by Illumilux?

2. Which strips run cooler?

3. Assuming I go with only 2 strips, what combination - 1 all white and 1 all blue or 1 50/50 and 1 all blue?

Thanks again.

This will indeed have all of the necessary parts for future dimming, minus the actual dimmer port that will be sold as a retrofit for it.
