LEDs & water - how close is too close?

Simple question with (I am anticipating) difficult answer. Kicking around a very low profile build and would need the lighting to be as close to the water surface as possible. Like inches. Or inch. Is it possible? Any suggestions on how? What will go wrong?

This would be FAR from your average tank build, so put on your tin foil 'creative' hats and pontificate a moment with me...

Salt creep, heat and water will kill LEDs. If you want them close, you will need to protect them somehow.

Its 100% possible to do what you want.. Just seal them properly... acrylic sheet/sealed lenses,etc...
