I had 8 in my office tank for the last 1.5 years, but one died about a week ago. They are almost always together and venture about the tank either collectively or in 2 separate groups. I love'em. Their colors (blue eyes, orange vertically-oriented stripes on the sides) have become more brilliant over time.

I'll add another vote for a black background.

The Apogons in my tank always stay close together. The colours become stronger over time, when they are adapted to the tank and feel safe.
A larger school will make them a bit less shy. They are relatively static fish, hanging out in one spot most of the time.

I won't buy anymore threadfins, but I will buy around 40-50 Apogon Margaritophorus. Don't ask me why, I just liked them instantly

Was that a typo? or did you really mean 40 or 50?? I am partial towards Apogons myself mainly due to their small size. A school of Threadfins with another school of a more active species would make for a very interesting display IMHO.

Hey Nick, no I haven't. My last foray into cardinalfish left me with over 75 red spots DOA or shortly thereafter.

Hey Leonardo, aren't the Margaritophorus rather shy? My reading on them seemed to point to a timid fish that would hide among the rocks most of the time.

They are somewhat shy, but in large numbers that would change fast, most fish lose their shyness rather quickly in large grpups.

where can i find more info about this fish? who carries them? btw, my new one will also be cardinal-only (and/or damsels) tank.

i am thinking about 30 or so of cardinal and 15 damsels.

Jonathan; I know they are shy fish. I hope they will show themselves more in a large group.
Besides that I chose for Apogons (instead i.e. Anthias) for their calm behaviour. I don't want the tank to be very busy. That's als the reason I'll only have two tangs (the yellow tang will leave soon)

dzhuo; I don't know anything about their availability in the U.S. In Europe they're available sometimes. Not very common but also not rare. Good luck with your new tank!

jnarowe I wouldn't consider that a failure. Red spots are almost impossible to keep alive. You should try a hardier species.

Do the Cardinals do well in a high flow tank? They seem like a very slow moving, mellow fish.

They'll adapt just fine. The flow in our tanks doesn't come close to what they deal with in their natural environment. As long as there is an aquascape to break up the flow, they'll find places to chill.

We should start a cardinalfish thread, this is detracting a lot from Leonardo's tank.

Thanks for answering that El Duderino, here in Europe it was not a time to be awake

The calciumreactor has been running all night, I think it will take another day to get it to the right pH (pH 6,4) This because of the large volume.

The Ca Reator is fed by a small Eheim return pump. I chose Eheim becuase I had very good experiences with them in the past for their durability.

Here you can see the calciumreactor that I hooked up last night. Still not the right pH...
Left to the Ca Reactor you can see the Schuran Kalkwasser reactor, fed by a Grotech Dosing pump.

Left side of the cabinet. BK supermarine 250. Waterlevel is a bit high, I'm thinking of building a platform for the skimmer.
But right now it is skimmer just how I want (a bit on the wet side)
The sump is elevated on a small table, so I can clean the sump easier.

The powermanager that is divided in groups, taking care of all the equipment. There is a build in surgeprotector.

Leonardo aren't you worried about having that power strip under the sump and potentially splashing some water on it or even having it on the floor in case some water spills?

Yes, that's why I will organise all the powerstrips etc. in closed plastic boxes and place the power manager above the sump

I can concentrate on that now, first I wanted to have the tank up and running. Thanks for the heads up.

I think most people don't realize that you're a fairly young guy, I guess this is due to your success with the tanks, since it just seems like you really know what you're doing and you have great ideas too.
