Leonardo's Lagoon

Thank you for the compliments! :)

Rickyrooz1; The colours of the T5 bulbs are:

2x24 watt Giessemann blue 22000 Kelvin
2x24 watt Giessemann blue 22000 Kelvin
2x80 watt Aqua Science Duo 15000 Kelvin
2x80 watt Aqua Science Blue 22000 Kelvin

Leo, amazing shots! Good to see the tank is coming along nicely. :) In your experience, does your group of apogons travel around the tank? My group just seems to stay in one spot of the tank all day, not showing themselves.

Finally some pictures of the lightrack; thanks for your patience! Don't mention the 'beautiful' red carpet, it's in my bedroom and my parents choice! ;)

------------------------------------------------------------

I wanted to have a very ajustable lightsetup; I want to point the light right above the tabling Acropora, without wasting anything. Thats why I made my lightrack this way:

Both Lumenarcs (not shown here) will have their own small rack, and it can be slided across the whole lightrack. Their also ajustable front to back a bit.
Also the two small 2x24 Watt T5 are slidable across the lightrack.

The two 2x80 Watt T5 pendants are fixed to the lightrack.

The whole aluminium lightrack is powdercoated so no corroded (toxic) aluminium can drip into the tank.

The 2 MH 70 Watt Spotlights will be clamped onto the rack, where extra light is needed.

Total lighting will be:

2x 400 Watt Aqua Connect with Lumatek E-ballasts in Lumenarcs
2x 2 80 Watt Aquascience T5 in ATI Pendants
2x 2 24 Watt Aquascience T5 in Aqua-Connect Pendants
2x 70 Watt 6500 K MH Spotlights with Osram E-ballasts

A small moonlight LED is pointed into one of the Lumenarcs to give an even, spreaded dim light.

I will post some FTS soon, when I'm done aquascaping.

very impressive and clean lightrack! :)

Kigs; Thanks!
I also experience the same behaviour. They are nocturnal fish, so at night they will hunt for plankton. Then you will se them more active and swimming in open water. A very small moonlight will help to observe that behaviour.
In daytime they are quiet, shy fish.

moo0o; Thank you! On the previous page you can see the finished Lightpendant hanging above the tank. (but I think you already noticed that)

reeferpnoy; Thanks. I like your thread too! Love the macro shots and your fish choice! :)

Thanks leo.. Wish I have time to go bigger like most of the people here .. Sometimes I wonder if my Cube thread belongs on the "large Forum"

That's a lot of light Leonardo. I don't recall you using that much light on your old tank. What was the reason for the increase in wattage? More tabling corals?

Total light of my old tank was:

2x24 Watt T5
2x24 Watt T5
2x250 Watt MH

596 Watt on a 92 gallon tank.

The total light on this setup is:

2x80 watt T5
2x80 watt T5
2x24 Watt T5
2x24 Watt T5
2x400 Watt MH

1216 Watt on a 160 gallon tank.

It is an increase. But the volume gives a false image. This tank has so much surface area compared to the volume. (because of the shallowness)
I initially chose for the 2x400 MH only. But the spread was not enough.
That's why I installed the T5 pendants. It also allow me to run the MH for a few hours less, so I save enery after all :)

Next to that, I need a lot of flow and light, because wildcap Acropora tables are used to natural conditions and need strong flow and light. Otherwise they are very sensitive to STN, next to that they won't colour up well ;)

Good point. What is the sq footage of the new tank vs. the old? Do you think that you could have gone with the 250w bulbs on such a shallow tank?

First off let me just say your first tank really inspired me, and your second tank is also very beautiful. Are you going to have The Formosa Forest look to this tank? I am thinking of creating a similar effect in part of my 150. I have two equipment questions for you, where did you get the 60” t-5 lights fixtures and bulbs from? My 150 is 60” x 24” x 24” and I still need to pick out the t-5 bulbs for it. The 70 Watt MH spots where are they going to be mounted on the light rack? Thanks.

Chrisrush; I'm not sure... I prefer to have too much light that I can ajust in duration of lighting, then weaker lighting for a longer period time.

Also the spread made me choose for 400 Watt bulbs. Every bulb (without looking at the T5) covers an area of 43"x32"

Watts compared to surface area:

Formosa Forest: 596 Watt on 32"x32" (0.58 Watt/")
Lagoon: 1216 Watt on 63"x43" (0,45 Watt/")

So per sq " it is less light actually :)

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

JCurry; Thank you very much for the compliment.
This tank will also have the Japanese inspired Formosa Forest look, only with tabling Acropora corals, and less Staghorns.

I ordered the ATI 80 Watt T5 pendants in Germany. The bulbs also came from Germany (I live next to Germany so it is easy for me...)
I would suggest Aqua-Science bulbs. They're the best available at the moment.
I'm not sure where to put the Spotlights, I have to search for a spot to mount them to the lightrack :D

Leonardo - loved your last tank, and this one looks like it is going to be killer. How many actual different pieces (species or color morphs) do you expect to keep in this tank?

PS - man, you should come and chill in the photogrpahy forums too.

Leo how did you get the parts to make your light rack? Were they built for you ( Someone had a Sheet metal stamp / press ? ) .

Leo - an amazing tank - I find your tank setup very inspirational. My current setup is similar to yours but not as large. I have also gone for the japanese inspired aquascaping and its does look great.

I was intrigued to your suggestion the aquascience bulbs are the current leaders - I was about to opt to purchase a coupleof KZ new gen bulbs (I think these are 14k) but would be interested to know if you have tried these and how you found them compared to your aquascience duo tubes on your setup.

Many thanks in advance for any info you can share, and once again thanks for sharing your amazing setup.

Roshan:cool:

Versus; I got the aluminium parts from the DIY supply store. The powdercoating was done for me.

roshan; Thank you very much! :) I don't have any info about the new generation KZ bulbs, and don't have info about them in comparison to the Aqua Science Bulbs.
Do you know if the New Gen KZ bulbs are 3 of 5 band T5 Bulbs?

I will also search for some more info, and try them when I need some new bulbs. Of course I will post my experiences in here. :)

I'm curious about your setup, would you like to send me a PM with the link?
