Leonardo's Lagoon

Thanks Jonathan. I have a Sony Cybershot DSC-F717 now. The lense on this camera is not that bad, but a Nikon or Canon would perform much better.

Right now I rather spend money on the tank then on a new camera :)

I hear ya there. Even though I have an older Nikon, I am temptred to go with Cannon the next time. They seem to have really gotten ahead of Nikon lately.

I don't buy frags from local hobbyists anymore. They have the higest risk of being infected.
Unfortunately I've found the same thing too :(.

Great new pics and fantastic coral (especially that milli ;) ) !

Leonardo has done it again. The Formosa Forest was a true inspiration for me. It's really nice to Leonardo exceed our expectations once again. The bare bottom layout and careful SPS placement make a living work of art.

Your equipment list is impressive, coupled with your husbandry those SPS really "pop." I think I missed it, what bulbs are you running?

I just bought a Nikon D40 to play with. I'm fairly impressed with it so far, but I might return it and pick up the same, or a D50 with a Macro lense. I've been curious about those Canon Evolts- but know little about them.

Thanks for the reactions!

Jonathan; I always tought Nikon was the leading brand. I will do some more research :)

Thanks Reeferpnoy! Most of these colonies came out of my previous tank and now have all the room to grow larger.

Ed; even with the 6101 Streams close to the surface, I don't have problems with air suctions. I do get the typical vortecs sometimes, but they never reach the pump intake. Maybe the high flow prevent the vortecs to reach the pump intakes.

Austin; Thank you! :) I have also bad experiences with trading with other reefers. It caused a mayor AEFW infection in my Formosa Forest. Never want to experience that again.

Thanks InsaneClownFish. My tank is far from done and I'm not as happy with it as I was with the Formosa Forest. But thanks for the kind words.
When I create the final aquascape I visioned I will be much more satisfied (can a reefkeer ever be totally satisfied?)

Please keep us updated about the experiences with your new camera!

InsaneClownFish; I use Aqua Connect 14000 Kelvin SE bulbs. They are burned with Lumatek E-Ballasts that burn them as intense as a Magnetic ballast. (even a bit more bright)
This makes the bulbs look crisp white, without losing the pink and purple colours. The PAR is also very high. I use two Lumenarc III Reflectors for them.

Lumatek E-ballast. I'm very pleased with them.

Supplemental lighting:

2 x two 80 Watt T5 (overdriven) Aqua Science Bulbs. (one blue and one DUO)
2 x two 24 watt T5 (overdriven) Giessemann Bulbs. (one Blue and one White)

I'm going to take a second look at those Lumantek E-Ballasts. I was planning on going with the SLS compatible Galaxy Ballasts for my supplemental Lumenmax 3 pendants. I assume those Lumanteks are compatible with DE HQI bulbs. I wonder how they would light up a couple Phoenix 14ks.

Nice full milli :)

Tritonian; I don't use Zeovit and don't dose Vodka.
I believe in strong feeding, heavy flow, strong lighting and natural SW parameters :)
I won't be home this weekend, so I can continue aquascaping next week. Will be finished Tuesday/Wednesday I think.

Dante_JoseCuerv; Will do that, thanks!

InsaneClownFish; Don't know if the Lumatek ballasts are compatible with DE bulbs, if I remember correctly they are. I'm very happy with them. They push the bulbs a bit harder making the Phoenix look crisp white and less blue, increasing the PAR at the same time. (my experience with the SE 400 Watt bulbs)

Leonardo,

Do you find that light bleeds into your room without an enclosure around your reflectors? It looks like you angled your T5 reflectors inward. If so, I imagine that helps a little. I really like it though, it's got a cool industrial look to it IMO. I hope you don't mind me copying it? :)

BTW, did you powder coat the outsides of your Lumenarcs too?

Thanks,
Paul

Hi Leonardo,

I'm really loving your "Lagoon" !

Two questions for you:

You tank is 14" high, how high is the water line..from the shots, it's seems to be 12-13" high ?

Do you mind sharing your light schedule with us ?

Thanks,
Chris

paulthomas; Because of the width of my tank, the light doesn't spill over the edges of my tank. The additional T5 reflectors help to direct all the light in the right way :)

When I designed this pendant I chose for this look instead of a closed, finished pendant becuase the Lumenarcs can be very nice to look at when you incorporate them well in a pendant.
Thats why I chose for an open aluminium structure, showing the reflectors and pendants. All in an aluminium or powdercoated silver finish.
I already liked the aluminium look of the Lumenarcs, so I did now powdercoated them. I did treated the inside and outside with a (clear) anti-corrosive coating. This also protect the insides of the Lumenarcs and T5 reflectors against saltwater splashed and corrosion stains.

Feel free to copy my design! If you have more questions, you can always ask them.

Chris; Thanks! :) The waterheight is about 13,3" high.

My lighting schedule is;

All T5 13 hours a day. (4x 80 watt + 4 x 24 watt) (11 am - 12 pm)
Both MH 7 hours a day (2x 400 Watt) (14 pm - 21 pm )

Soon I will begin to experiment with my two 70 Watt MH spots, to aim some additional light directly to the Tables. :)

Chris; Thanks! :) The waterheight is about 13,3" high.

Thanks Leonardo,

If you had to start over again, would you keep the same height - 14" ?

Chris

ksed; I'm verry happy with it. It is easy to ajust and I can control the nutrient level in the tank very well.

Chris; Of course I would ;) I think this is the most ideal tank to grow large tabling Acropora. Because I wanted some diversity, I also have some non tabling SPS.
Besides that I use almost no liverrock in my aquascapes (Lagoon and Formosa Forest) so I don't lose any height. And I like the lagoon-style look of course ;)
